Some 7mm Rem Mag help if you could...

Have purchased the following to try loading in my Savage 111 with 24in barrel.

Sierra 160gr HPBT Gamekings
Reloader 25 powder.
Federal 215 primers.

Sierra does not list Reloader 25 for their reloads. (I may have too old of a book).
Alliant doesn't show Sierra 160gr Gameking bullets.

I emailed Alliant, and they said to use the Speer recipe that they have listed.

The COL is different between what Sierra lists for this bullet, and what Alliant says for the Speer.

Also, no cannalure on the bullet. Do I crimp, or not crimp???

I sent you a PM with data from the current Sierra manual. Still no RL25 listed.

If the bullet doesn't have a cannelure I wouldn't crimp.

Don't crimp if it doesn't. Mine bullets have a cannelure, and I still don't crimp.

I would use what Alliant told you. As long as the bullet has the same type profile, you're good. Start low and work up after finding the proper OAL for your rifle with that bullet you have.

Sierra makes two 160 grain 7 mm bullets. I load #1925, which they say is designed for higher velocity. That hollow point nose is a little shorter than a typical spitzer. I load mine to 3.23 OAL vs. 3.29 for Nosler Accubonds. I use Re 22 and get a little better velocity than I got with Re 25, but your results may differ. Yes, you're good with the Speer data, but of course work up. +1 on no crimp. I don't crimp any rifle rounds.

I'm shooting a 140 gn Sierra Gameking with RL22. One of the great thins about Sierra is that you can call and talk directly to their ballistic tech, the guys who build the data to write the manuals, and they'll take as much time as necessary to help with any problem - EVEN if you're not using their product. I've done this several times and they've never steered me wrong. Great people and IMO great bullets. Get their opinion.

I loaded that bullet for years. The load was a max charge of H4831sc over a Federal 215M primer. I think RL25 is way too slow for the 7mm mag. That's gonna be more for the .300 RUM or something else that looks like a coke bottle.

You don't need to crimp your bullets; it'll only deform them and make them less accurate.

The question would be why did you buy a powder not listed in your book? You do have a manual don't you? Chances are the powder is too slow for your application and at best will be highly inefficient. GW

Years ago when I first bought a Chronograph I wanted max velocities...using a 175 Hornady SP bullet in the 7mm Rem Mag (Rem 700) I used H870 (very slow burning powder) with a charge that was up to the base of the case neck ---the average Muzzle Velocity was 3,050 FPS. Recoil was downright "nasty" so I settled for the Hornady 139 SP with IMR4350 powder at 3,250 FPS MV...

These days I only shoot cast with Unique powder, in it...

I had gotten the Reloader 25 because of reading of other peoples favorable results with the 140 gr. bullets.
I do have a load book, and it does list Reloader 25, just not with Sierra bullets. And while looking at Sierra's recipe I noticed that they actually use a higher weight charge, than what others are listing as Max Load.

Both Nosler and Speer list a max of 70 grains Re25 for their 160's. Nosler gets essentially the same velocity with Re22 and Re25. So does Speer. I get just a little more with Re22 out of a 24" Rem 700, with excellent consistency and MOA groups. Since I use Re22 for other calibers, that's what I go with, but you should do well with Re25 and 160's. Regarding differences in manuals, they report their results with their setup, and there is some variation. However, I see less difference in 7 Mag than some other calibers. That's why we work up. Let us know how you do.

Thats still my favorite 7mm mag load! If H870 worked so well for me, then I can't help but think RE25 will do just fine with heavy bullets. H870 was about teh slowest powder you could get at the time.
