.416 Taylor

I read of this cartridge in Ken Waters'
book "Pet Loads", and it sounds like a
good idea. a combination of buffalo-level
power with a flatter trajectory than .458WM,
in a long-action length.

but I've never heard or read of it other
than in Waters' book. are folks unaware of
it, or has it been tried and found wanting?
or is there a vast .416 Taylor underground
of which I'm unaware?

not that I'm overrun with buffaloes at the
moment, I'm just doing my monthly
"Choose the Ideal Rifle Battery" exercise...

I have seen one .416 Taylor and it was a beautiful bolt action express rifle. If you ever make it to Africa, you will find that most professional hunters despise wildcat cartridges and likewise have no use for hand loaded ammunition when hunting dangerous game. I think this has a lot to do with large bore wildcats not being widely accepted. Just my two cents worth.

Gee, I've hunted Africa about 2 dozen times, many places, Dik-Dik to Elephant, and find my .35 Whelen and .416 Taylor (on Mauser '98 actions) drooled over everywhere. I've never used a factory loaded round in Africa or any other place.
