S&W M&P 38 spl. revolver

Need some info on an old S&W revolver that I've been looking at.

The Seller says:

Smith & Wesson 38 M&P Pre War model
5 screw
5" barrel
diamond grips, 85% blue
all original
ser. # 3996**

(I wasn't aware that S&W made 5" models back in the 30s.)

Any info as to the date of manufacture and relative worth
is greatly appreciated.
He's asking $250.

Thanks Harley, and to all!

have tape, ol' dad needs a nice Christmas present...

#241704-1000000; 758,296 manufactured. 1915-1942, so a guess might be in the early 20's. Five inch guns were made from 1899 onwards. Standard Catalog shows $250 (Excellent), $175 (VG)
