Do not load 30-30 but do the others. I use different powders.
30-06 / 280 - H4831 308 and 22-250 - IMR3031 I have used these for years with good results at range and in the field. Lots of newer stuff around. I did not say better stuff. You will get a lot of input.

just getting started and was on hodgen site and varget was listed for all 4 loads and was wondering if that is the best way. How do you find the best powder for each load in the books is the best load the first listed on the bullet weight.

Yeah, you'll get a lot of input. Mostly informative info. Heres mine:
30-06: 165's- 180's: H-4350 Don't have a 280, but the same powder that works in a .270 Win , works in a 280 Rem: H-4831 22-250: Varget 30-30: RL#15 You're going to get different info on this, these are just the powders I use; but they work for me. Lets see what comes. |

30/06 150 grn. H414, 165 and 180 I4350 or H4350, 22/250 55grn. H380, 40grn. Benchmark, 30/30 I4064 (Will try the new Leverloution as soon as I can find some). .280 don't know but it should be close to the .270 so H4350, I4350, 4831.
I use Varget for some of my 338/06 loads and would guess it would work just as well in the 30/06, just haven't tried it. Bill

IMR 4064 will work in all of them. It might not be the "best" load for all, but it works good in 30-06 and pretty good in 30-30. I think 4064 is a pretty good all around powder.

NESHOOTER, you're right. After my first reply, I looked up some more Varget data. The only one I couldn't find Varget info on was the .280 Rem.
I really like Varget in my 22-250 and my son's .308 Win. I just might give it a try in one of my 30-06's. Hmmm, sounds like more 'man cave" time! |

Rifletom, You know I even loaded some .223 with varget and using a 40 v-max out of a savage 1-7 twist and it held its own with the 60 varm sierra, even though it was compressed in a winchester case. The L.C. holds more per volume but these were for my Dad... and he did well and this was my first loading for his new varm rifle...

Roger that NESHOOTER, I 'll be trying some Varget in in a couple of different rifles, just to see whats out there! You never know 'till you try.
