What would be the ideal "first" machine gun for somebody interested in WWII history. Let's also say that I don't really want to have to pay over a $1000 for it. Are Sten guns available in that price range?

Nope. Going rate for Stens is $2200-2500 or so. Also depends on if it is a "tube gun" or an original.

For $1000, you are probably going to be limited to an M11 9mm.

And with a minimum hike of $200 everytime one changes hands, they are going to keep going up.
