Small 9mm with External Hammer

Looking for a carry 9mm but I want something with an external hammer. First thing that jumped in my mind was a Sig... but I want to consider everything.

Walther P5, P5 Compact, SIG-Sauer P225/P6.

Not very well known or popular because of price. It's a very slick pistol and extremely accurate.

Re: Small 9mm with External Hammer

Sig P938...best one you're gonna find.

If you want a DA/SA then a Sig P239 (it is also slightly bigger than the 938).

If "small" means "able to be pocket carried" then I'd go Sig P938 or P290. The P290 RS is a reasonably priced poly framed DAO gun, the P938 if you prefer metal frames and single action (and are willing to pay the higher price).

Both are good guns. I have a P938 and recommend it highly.

CZ makes a nice line up of compacts. RAMI, Compact, PCR and P-01.

It has a hammer alright, and it's external -- but it's buried in the rear of the slide so that it can't be thumb-cocked...

If the OP is just seeking to avoid a striker-fired pistol, the PF9 is hammer-fired. If he wants a thumb-cockable weapon, he needs to look elsewhere.

We need some clarification as to what you need in a 'small' 9mm with a hammer.

Small to me is what I posted. There's also compact, sub-compact, mini-, and micro.

I think we can assume he doesn't want or need a micro or mini.

We don't see nearly enough P5s on this website. Fantastic pistols.

Do you think that's what he wants or are you just wanting to argue?

New? Used? Self Defense?....

In general, Id look at the HK P2000sk LEM(law enforcement modification) or the SIG Sauer P239 DAK(Double Action Kellerman).
A DA only pistol will be safe & you avoid the false claims of misuse or AD by a prosecutor/criminal investigator.

ParaUSA sells the LDA line which is DA only, hammer fired but Im not sure which 9x19mm .

I'm not saying that us what he wants, and I don't want to argue. I'm just suggesting that we give him examples of relatively small pistols and not make assumptions of what he wants until he gives us a little more to go on.

Sorry for the late response.... Small is in carry... not necessarily pocket carry, but something that can conceal easily.

"External hammer" as in the ability to cock and decock the hammer...

Star Firestar. 7 round magazine, single action auto, barely larger (though twice the weight) than a Kel Tec PF9.

It seems like similar questions have come up several times in the last couple of weeks, so let me give a similar answer.

If used guns are in the running, consider the S&W metal-frame centerfire line. These pistols have exposed hammers- usually bobbed on the compacts- and, on standard versions, a hammer-blocking slide-mounted decocker/safety. They were offered in 3 design generations, but factory compacts only came in the last two, and DAO models only in the last one. FWIW almost all standard-production examples that aren't DAO have mag disconnects.

The 2nd-gen compact models were the 469 (blue or nickel finish, alloy frame) and 669 (stainless finish, alloy); both of these are double-stack 12+1rd capacity.

The 3rd-gen model line was more complex. The double-stacks were the 6904 (improved 469), 6906 (improved 669), their DAO equivalents (6944 and 6946), and an uncommon frame-decocker stainless model (the 6926). There were also 8+1rd single-stack versions: the 3913 (stainless), 3914 (matte blue), 3953 (DAO 3913), and 3954 (DAO 3914), along with a pair of budget "Value Series" versions of the first two- the 908S and 908 respectively. Just to make things a wee bit more complicated, there was also an uncommon 3rd-gen subcompact called the CS-9 (for "Chief's Special 9"), which was essentially a 3913/3914 shorn of 1/2" of barrel length and 1 round of mag capacity (7+1rd).

Got all that? There's a test later.

CZ 2075 Rami.....slightly smaller than a Glock 26, but a little heavier. I've had both and as far as accuracy goes, the 26 can't touch the Rami. I don't mind at all that it's heavier since I usually carry AIWB anyway. Now, if you want something just a little larger but a hair lighter, see that PCR above. I have one of those, too, and it's even more accurate than the Rami. 28 handguns in 4+ yrs and the best all 'round for me so far have easily been the CZ's. Plus, they're drop dead sexy......

I would look at the Sig 239. I love mine and it's a real tack driver. However there are smaller 9mm's out there with a little more capacity in the magazine. I guess I have just gotten used to mine so I just carry an extra mag.
