The best would be an older S&W revolver of your choice.

My go to is my CZ 75D PCR. I absolutely love this pistol. After 200 rounds of 124gr ball ammo and 50 rounds of 147gr defense ammo through her, the trigger in DA has lightened up. The SA trigger pull is better also. But it was very good to begin with.

Star M43 Starfire. All metal, handles recoil, compact.... the clear winner.

Interesting

I find it interesting that the OP's question does not use the word "compact", yet a very high percentage of responses list compact or sub compact models of firearms. It is a very broad based question, but without a size limitation. Apparently though in this day and age, carry equals compact/subcompact and I'm not sure that's true, nor advisable for that matter.

Certainly dress , physique and activities lend to what an individual can conceal, and smaller guns conceal easier for everybody, regardless. And any gun is usually better than no gun. But beware the trade off of convenience over effectiveness.

As a general rule, even today with higher mag capacity and optical sights, I believe smaller guns are harder to shoot than larger guns, smaller grips and lighter weight contributing factors. If your compact is not mounted with an optical sight, you have the issue of short sight radius as well. If you get into the single stack v. double stack, you are losing mag capacity. If you drop down to .380 cal or smaller, you are giving up horsepower. If you shorten the barrel to extreme, you are giving up horsepower.

My theory is apparently not popular these days, I got flamed on another thread for expressing same. But I see little logic in carrying something like a subcompact as opposed to a "medium" or even full size if all factors permit.
To use Glock as an example say a G43 v. a G19.

True, but I am past carrying a good size pistol under a frock coat like Doc Holliday.
CCW means pocket size these days

Agreed!

I still pack my G19 and a spare mag. It's too much pistol to pack IWB constantly. AN LCP in my pocket mostly, the G19 lives in my man bag. I take my backpack man bag with me everywhere.
In fact it was treated to new sights yesterday, it may get a red dot since I don't carry it on body much at all.

Easy shooting, accurate, great DA/SA trigger, 13+1, and the 4" barrel gives the .380 a boost it doesn't get in smaller pistols.

The S&W EZ 9 would be a good choice. It has an internal hammer and is SAO.

Yes. Mimber aka Kimber does have a terrible reputation. If you go to 1911 Addict, almost anything about Kimber includes the words "hate" in the title

Kimber also released the worst 9mm ever in modern history. Unlike other guns with issues, Kimber never could fix their Solo.
None of this comment is correct! Kimber makes one of the better 1911s and most folks will agree with that statement. Some folks want to sound like they know all about 1911s and they usually don't know much. When someone just slams a manufacture rather than commenting on what is a good manufacture, it tells us everything we need to know about that person LOL

An aluminum frame 1911 Commander or Compact! I prefer a 45ACP but a 9MM will do. I have 2 Kimbers and a Tisas that fit that bill. Actually, I haven't shot the Tisas enough just yet to green light it for carry but it sure feels good in hand and shoots good! It is the Stinger model, aluminum frame, bobbed grip, 9MM, Commander. It is a pretty nice gun really and was a very reasonable price. Another 400 rounds without an issue and it will be in the rotation!!!

The two best for me are the Springfield Armory XDe 3.3 in 9mm and the Ruger LCRx 1.87" in 9mm.

I have been really happy with my 3" alloy Kimber 1911, along with another half-dozen (or more) Kimber 1911s. Still own several after my major down-sizing...thanks, cancer.

And I actually liked my Solo CDP with the laser. Very similar in size, weight and trigger to my Kahr PM9.

Sold it to a good friend who likes it quite well. I trust he will own, carry and shoot it for years to come.

I have a model 34 dated 1943; the slide/hammer bite is horrendous

I've been taking a hard look at the Alpha Foxtrot S15. It's a compact double-stack "2011" in 9mm, Made in the USA in Duluth, GA and it uses Shield Arms S15 Magazines.

Beretta PX4 has entered the game

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned the Beretta PX4 Storm Compact, especially the Compact Carry. The base model is an excellent gun that's pretty easy to upgrade and fine-tune. The original Compact Carry is the best of any iteration since it included Beretta's competition trigger group from the factory. The latest version doesn't, but it can be added.

My Compact Carry with the Langdon trigger bar has a smoother trigger than my Cajunized P-01, though a hair heavier in single-action. It's also more comfortable when carrying it appendix.

I just got an HK P2000sk with the LEM trigger.
I previously owned the variant 3 which is the DA/SA version.
Similar size to a Glock 26 and just as fat, but a nice trigger and hammer fired.

Beretta Tomcat has been dependable and accurate. To me if you are doing CCW you need a pistol that is dependable. Some of the small pocket guns are junk and I wouldn’t trust one in dire situations. Some of them are very popular because of price. The Ruger LCP is the most dependable and accurate for the money.

Why, the Compact, the 75, the 75D, P-09, the P-09 Nocturne, the P-10C and the 97b for starters.
