Hi I'm an new hunter and have to decide on a gun. the problem is, Im really confused what's best to get. I want a 30-06 caliber and preferably Remington since its American. I've looked at the models and I don't know the difference. Which model would you guys reccomend for deer hunting in MS? Please drop all the knowledge you feel like. Thanks!

If you want to stay with Remington look at there 700 SPS (Special Purpose Synthetic) in .30-06, good general use hunting rifle synthetic stock so minimal weather problems and can have blue steel or stainless.

I'll second the 700. I use the .308 and can't say enough good about it.

The 700 is a very strong and reliable action. A synthetic stock is practical if you anticipate hunting often in wet weather. I think the SPS is a fairly recent offering. Among used models, the Model 700 ADL is common on dealer shelves. It was made with wood and synthetic stocks. I had a synthetic one in 7 mil mag which was very sturdy and accurate. Liking wood, I have also always liked the Model 700 BDL, which is at the top of the fancy scale for factory 700s. They have good wood and very nice metal fitting and finish, a gun you can take pride in, and there are also many of these in the used ranks.

My son and I went through this just last year NewhunterMS so don't feel alone, there are a ton of 700's to choose from. He settled on the least expensive model, an ADL in 7mm Remington Mag that he paid $400 for. His thinking is that he can add to it as he gets the money and create the gun he wants. Stock, the gun shoots 1" groups at 100 yards consistantly and he shot his first buck with it this year so he is happy of course.

Newhunter:

I shoot five Winchester model 70's in calibers from .223 Remington to .375 H&H magnum. The model variatioin range form pre 1964 controled feed to XTR push feed. In addition I have five other rifles that set in the safe when I go hunting. When I go hunting I take my pre 64 model 70 Winchester in 30/06. With it I have taken a dozen deer, three antelope, one javelina several coyotes and countless jack rabbits. As for calibers, any of the calibers based on the .308 Win. or based on the 30/06 will do.

+ 1 on the 700 . It is a proven hunting rifle with a good upgrade path . I also would consider The rew Ruger American Rifle . It to is made in the US . I own one and like it very much . There is only one down side that I see with the American . There is no upgrade ability . Because it's a new rifle there are no after market parts for it . It's accurate right out of the box .Has a good trigger and bolt and is a good value .I paid right around $400 out the door .

Here is my thread on the American http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=492169

Another American-Made rifle is the Marlin X-7, which starts at $299 for a baseline blued/synthetic-stock rifle...
add stainless for another $50-60, wood stock for $99 from Boyd's...whatever you prefer...

Sub-Moa from the box at $299, Yeehaw!!
Spend the savings on a Nikon scope!!

You forgot to mention what part of Mississippi...
Like Laurel...Hattiesburg...Biloxi....Columbus...lots good hunting in MS
