New Shotgun

Hello all. I know the ammo thing is kind of a dead horse beaten, warmed over, and beaten again, so let's just say I want a 20 gauge. That ammo is everywhere. I'm looking at the options out there, and I'm a little confused. I have a '70-something era 870 that I love in 12 gauge. However, I hear that Remington QC is down the tubes and the 870s are having extraction problems with their bargain models. I'm not sure I want to shell out for another Wingmaster. I have an H&R single shot as well, which is an option, but it's a little rough. It works, though. What are your recommendations for a new 20 out there that won't break the bank. I'm thinking a $400 limit would be about it. Used is good as well.

Within that budget limit, it'd be hard to do better than a new Mossberg 500 in one form or another - available through Bud's Gun Shop in the $300-$400 range.

MUCH better than a turkey made in Turkey.

Mossberg SA-20- Very nice looking semi automatic 20 gauge, comes in a lot of different styles, goes for about $500.

Mossberg 500- Very reliable pump action that can be found chambered in 20 gauge for around $300 at Walmart.

I have nothing against semis, but when the opportunity allows, I like to catch my shells. I think I'll go pump or single shot.

What's wrong with a good used 20 gauge Wingmaster or 1100? Lots of those out there. I had an Express, and never had problem one, but I didn't keep it, because life for me is too short for flat black metal, cheap wood, or synthetic stocks. An LW20 Wingmaster is a sweet little gun, and an LT20 1100 is great also. The polished guns also weigh less than the rough ones. It isn't much, but it is real. My LT20 1100 with a walnut youth stock and a 26" Skeet barrel weighed less than a flat black Youth model 1100 with the 23" (?) barrel.

I own an 870 Express. Bought at Cabela's in 2012 and it's been a fine shotgun. It is the Express Tactical with the ghost ring sites. I've put some 200 or so rounds thru it thus far and all has been good. Dave Mc. would say it's just starting to get wear marks. No extraction problems and it feeds and fires fine if I do my part.

Granted it's a 12 guage.

How much am I looking at, fair price, for a used wingmaster 20 in this market? I could look at Gunbroker, but that's GB prices, not exactly real life pricing.

A Wingmaster is not a semiauto. And you should be able to pick up a very good used 20 gauge well under $400.

Yeah I have a Wingmaster in 12. For those of you above, it's just a high-grade 870 with shiny blue steel and higher grade wood. It's a fluff and buff. I'll keep an eye out for a 20 gauge if you think they're available under $400. The 12 gauge versions around here are getting a little ridiculous NIB, but I haven't priced a used one.
