Coke.
Yep - Coca Cola. My wife read online that Coke would remove old press in place floor tile adhesive & darned if it didn't work like a charm! It doesn't smear it around like most other solvents & it's safe to handle & doesn't have any noxious and/or toxic fumes. Other common household items: - Lard - Bacon grease - Mineral oil - Dish washing liquids Goo Gone, Goof Off, WD40, #9, lighter fluid, Tiki Torch fuel, charcoal lighter, K-1 Kerosene, paint thinner (mineral spirits) & even gasoline are all pretty much just organic solvents (petroleum products w/varying amounts of aromatic and aliphatic distillates)(the more aromatic - the stronger). Xylol, Toluene and lacquer thinner are among the more common aromatics. The aromatics are the ones most likely to harm "plastics". FWIW - Goo Gone & Goof Off used to contain a whole lot of Xylol. They no longer do because of VOC regulations. If you have older bottles - like 15 to 20 years ago - be careful where you use it. We (my wife and I ) use it a lot on our rentals & we bought a whole bunch of it back in 2003. It IS the older/stronger formula. Xylol is listed on the label - which I don't believe it still is. Acetone (fingernail polish/remover) is a very fast flashing (boils off at low temperature) member of the Ketone family. It's produced in the human body & is a fairly safe to use solvent. The biggest problem with it is - - it combines with other fairly common things - such as Hydrogen Peroxide and/or bleach @ rather diluted concentrations. Nasty things can happen. Acetone Peroxide is an explosive & chloroform can be nasty to breath. So - even though Acetone itself is pretty innocuous - when mixed by either accident or design, the result really isn't. Brake Cleaner is more or less just a spray version of aromatic/aliphatic solvents. The older chlorinated stuff was just plain deadly. Bottom line here is - unless you know it's safe, like the food type stuff I mentioned above - take all the solvent based stuff outside. OR Don't. I blew off all the "safety" stuff and breathed in all that crap up above. Now, my "gun budget" goes to stuff like a $4,000 Inogen One, $300 a month Symbicort prescription... My "Golden years" are lived within the limits of a 25 foot oxygen hose. Don't be a stupid ass like me - - do you lungs a favor. You might just live long enough to experience the results. |

Plain white vinegar works. Don't get it on bluing though. Goo-Gone is expensive stuff, but it works. Lighter fluid works well too.
