My mos is 13f, I've clear a room before

Where I live it would probly take the sheriff 45 to get there and I'm not waiting for my house to get busted up.

As for my initial decision to grab the 20 was not a good idea

I'm going to grab the twelve right out the gate. As for arming the lady I called out friendly coming in before I turned the corner when I was coming back

20 gauge is my primary HD gun for a bunch of reasons but as to what is available I just checked my inventory and I have #8, #7 1/2, #6, #4, shot. 4 buck, 3 buck, 00 buck shot plus SST slugs and FTX slugs. I'm sure I don't have everything but I guarantee you can get 00.

Because of the people in my house and the way my house is laid out I use #4 shot but your situation may be different and you have to make your own choices but gimmick rounds isn't one of the choices. At 10' that rubber ball is as lethal as anything you can shoot out of a shotgun barrel. It was designed for crowd control and they were thinking 50' + not up close and personal.

For SHR970 with the 5" hole at 10' you might want to check your choke. At 10' I put a hole through a 2X4 just big enough to stick my thumb through using #4 shot and an IM choke. at 8 yards I have your 5" pattern and 8 yards is the absolute longest shot I could make in my house, figure most SD shots would be less than half that.

Comment on the light was for the portable light, I have a night light in the living room, and the kitchen and the front porch plus a light on a motion detector on the garage. All of those can be bypassed by pulling my meter and the house is dark but my maglight on my nightstand will still work. I live in the sticks and a car accident with a power pole or a lightning strike on a transformer can put me in darkness for 3 or 4 house easy. Porchlight won't do me much good then but one of my maglights will always work.

I alwasy grab my 12ga loaded with #4 Buck and 00 Buck alternatingly. I also have my Glock 20 in 10mm on the nightstand to get me to my 12ga and it goes with me as backup should the shotgun fail...

You have to have a plan!

My wife knows that when I get up to check noises, she gets in the closet on the floor. I want her as low as possible. You never know what direction you will have to shoot in your home, so having her on the floor helps to minimize the chance that she will get hit by rounds through the walls. Most invaders will not be on the floor, they will be standing either looking to fight or looking to run. Center Mass on the average person will be about 5 feet off the ground.

As others have said, IF I have to use my weapon to defend our lives and home, then the last thing I will be worried about is how much it will cost to replace drywall, furniture, or any other material object...

Be safe and keep a clear head!

Your right on the light source.

I tried out the tri ball and at 10 feet it did not penetrate a old carhart nor leather jacket, it did dent the hell out of the ply wood behind it, I havnt tried it on any more to save the last two but I wonder if it would punch through cotton. The bean bag just dented the wood a little with the carhart on the wood so I would think this will be the best round for non leathal Amunition given my houses lay out, I'd rather not kill an unarmed man.

You shouldn't be shooting an unarmed man, you only use deadly force to save your life or someone else's from eminent danger.

As far as what load to use, I keep 12ga 00 buck in my 870 which has a good light on it and a saddle with reinforcements

I wouldn't use anything less than #4 buck, bird shot is for shooting birds

Yes 00 buck will pass thru walls. They are .30cal balls. I'd go with #4 steel shot.

You don't shoot deer behind cover with Buckshot. Buckshot is defeated by the cheesiest body armor they make. Buckshot is fairly easily defeated and is certainly not known for being an excellent penetrator or over penetrator.

I am not saying that Buckshot is bad or wont work on ideal shots at all. I simply say that it doesn't have enough penetration for me. If someone has invaded my home I want to be able to reach them and not let them rest.

If you are willing to do the mail order thing... You can readily find #2 and #1 buck in 20ga.

I am not a mailorder sort of guy so I use the #3buck I find in walmart.

Possession of a knife or gun are not the only qualifiers for being "armed'... Sorry but I am not in the business of determining the level of violence a person is capable of dealing out... I am in the business of protecting my family. If a person makes entry into my home, they are living on limited moments.

The above is an unarmed person...

Anyone with limbs is also armed and potentially lethal or capable of causing GBH.

This isn't a tickling contest.

If it won't do much to dry wall what makes you think it will do much to a person intent on causing harm to you and yours.

Bird shot for birds, buckshot for bad guys.

Yeah, I confess I grab a pistol when I hear a BITN (bump in the night).

I actually just bought this single-shot 20 ga. (.22 Mag/20 ga. O/U actually) and am looking forward to trying the assorted 2-3/4" and 3" bucksot loads I've seen. I expect 1,200 fps 3" #2 Buckshot and 2-3/4" #6 birdshot will be the ultimate items on the menu for this gun's dinner. I would still not feel undergunned with 2-3/4" #4 Buckshot in this.

I have a 12 gauge 870 with buckshot then slug and back to buckshot etc. It is around for just those "bumps in the night".

I figure the sound of racking it closed out to take a lot of fight out of an intruder but if not then well "the castle law" kicks in big time.

this week's buckshot -vs- birdshot thread

A 20-gauge stoked with #3 buckshot is a most excellent choice for home-defense. With birdshot no..

How hard does that 2 gauge kick?! Let us know how the racking sound of the shotgun, and keeping track of what shell is next in the chamber when you're in fear for your life and the adrenaline is pumping works out for you in your next life-and-death scenario..

If he is a combat vet or a druggie high on something that sound could trigger an adverse reaction and you won't hear a gun being racked, just a gun going off and a muzzle blast pointed in your direction. Forget fancy loads and gun handling, pick one and figure the only sound a burglar should hear is your safety going off just before you shoot him. The first thing he should see is a bright light in his face so you can make sure it isn't Junior sneaking home or the next door neighbor drunk and in the wrong house.

I have had both things happen.

Light him up
Identify
Take action
Wait for cops
Keep mouth shut till you talk to lawyer

Got me on the "2" gauge. Edited to be the correct 12.

To answer your question, since for 2 decades my 12 gauge 18" slug gun that I got when we went to ANWR, was my only shotgun and since I used it for years to do skeet, sporting clays, bird shooting, pest control and deer hunting. I have gotten reasonably used to the recoil, the operation and instinctive nature of using it.

The two times, I have gone for it in the middle of a night when I was sound asleep I was shocked at how instinctive it was. I remember waking up, thinking go for the gun and the next thing I had it and was racking it closed. By the time I had the round chambered I was wide awake and the wife was on the phone to 911. We went into defensive mode and in both cases things worked out just fine.

Thanks for the advice. I feel confident and comfortable with my handling of the gun and how I have it loaded and to me that is what really matters.

But seriously folks...

Generally they recomend #1 Buck.

Firearms Yactical Institute:

http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs10.htm

20 Gauge Shotshell Ammunition Recommendations

We're unaware of any ammunition company who offers a 20 gauge shotshell that is loaded with #1 buckshot. The largest shot size commercially available that we know of is number 2 buck.

From a strict wound ballistics standpoint, we feel the Federal Classic 3-inch 20 gauge Magnum number 2 buckshot cartridge is the best choice. It contains 18 pellets of number 2 buckshot in a plastic shotcup with granulated plastic shot buffer.

However, the Federal Classic load might produce too much recoil for some people. Given this consideration, Remington's Premier Buckshot 2 ¾-inch 20 gauge number 3 buckshot cartridge is the next best choice. This load contains 20 pieces of nickel-plated, hardened lead shot that is buffered to reduce pellet deformation from post ignition acceleration and terminal impact. The Remington buckshot load will probably produce the tightest shot patterns in 20 gauge shotguns.

Third place is Winchester's 3-inch 20 gauge Magnum number 3 buckshot cartridge, which contains 24 pieces of buffered, copper-plated, hardened lead shot.

"Number 1 buck is the smallest diameter shot that reliably and consistently penetrates more than 12 inches of standard ordnance gelatin when fired at typical shotgun engagement distances. A standard 2 ¾-inch 12 gauge shotshell contains 16 pellets of #1 buck. The total combined cross sectional area of the 16 pellets is 1.13 square inches. Compared to the total combined cross sectional area of the nine pellets in a standard #00 (double-aught) buck shotshell (0.77 square inches), the # 1 buck shotshell has the capacity to produce over 30 percent more potentially effective wound trauma. In all shotshell loads, number 1 buckshot produces more potentially effective wound trauma than either #00 or #000 buck. In addition, number 1 buck is less likely to over-penetrate and exit an attacker's body."
