How about a 30-30, can kill the same stuff a 30-06 can just at a shorter distance and the recoil is much easier/shells are cheaper, and...they are just plain fun to shoot.
Not always. I had a Win '94 (straight grip) with no recoil pad and that thing actually hurt when shooting Hornady LeverEvolution ammo. I'd rather shoot my 30-06.

I would think you'd have to have balls the size of a 400lb boar's to hunt wild pigs on the ground with a bolt action.

I wouldn't want to be cycling the bolt when a boar charges.
Nope, but it is kinda fun. Just make the first shot count. A single shot pistol is a bit of a rush too.

People who have never hunted hogs get this idea that they are like African lions that will charge you if you don't drop them immediately. A charging hog is extremely rare - usually a momma that is protecting piglets. Even the momma will lead her piglets away from danger unless you corner her. Boars will also go out of their way to avoid humans. Only if you get really tight to them should you feel any need to guard against attack.

I would probably get a 7/08 or a .308.
