I like my S&W model 10, but any used smith or ruger would be good. A good semi auto would be a Makarov.

Ruger P95dc
I have had a ruger P95 for around 8 years now. Very reliable. Very accurate. My new favorite from Ruger is the P345. I like the .45 round better.

WVsig,
Nickel Beretta LNIB 84FS with box and 2 10 round mags OTD for under $300. And where should he start looking for that price? I've only seen used all black and plastic grips for that price and they where worn. Might I suggest a Stoeger cougar 8000. |

With a street price of $299 the Sigma in either 9mm or .40 is a very good deal.

My best purchase was a Ruger P89, in that price range. Paid $299 for it 18 years ago. It was my first handgun.

CZ-82. Sigma
I got a Colt Oofficial Police once for $250.00, but I don't see them at that price often.

NAA Black Widow. It can be had in .22LR or .22 Mag for about $250 new, and with both cylinders for under $300.
It's the smallest gun I can shoot well. A great training aid and plinker with .22LR or .22 Shorts. With the .22 Mag cylinder, it's a tiny CC weapon that can deliver the goods. |

New I would go with the P95. I got my blued ruger P95 for under $300, I think it was $289 on sale a couple years ago. Like someone mentioned previously used pistols and police trade ins are great options too.
Like this S&W 5906 9mm (lot's of police used to use these, they're nice guns) If you look you can find them cheap http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=219144094 |

Choices from my own experience and all bought for well below your price limit:
Tokarev (Norinco makes 'em in 9MM, too!) Old Colt police revolver in .38 SPL Makarov An old S&W K-frame in .38 SPL Feg PA-63 Star Mod 30 Personally, I like Toks and the Norinco Tok in 9MM is one killer pistol. It's target-gun accurate and it hasn't jammed on me once. For something more powerful, get a 7.62 pistol; Wolf makes a great 7.62 hollow point. Colt: These things are great shooters and seem to go cheaply. I picked up a good one for $250 this year. Maks and K-frames: They're great but I'll let others fill you in with the details. FEG: If you splurge $15 on a softer hammer spring and a stiffer recoil spring from Wolff, this becomes a great, easy-handling, very accurate gun. The DA pull becomes very pleasant. It also has never jammed on me. Star Mod 30: DA/SA, 9MM, built like a tank, accurate, easy to strip down and the mags hold 15 or 17 (Ramline's 17 round S&W 5900 series mags work in this gun!) Never a jam with this one, either. I see them in like-new condition on Gunbroker for $350. Mine cost $235, I think. Here's the Star in case you're not familiar:
