Wow,
I guess the 750,000 or so Remington 870 police, Riot, and military shotgun models must be quite a pipe dream!

does a barrel shroud on a shotgun serve any useful purpose? what the heck are they for other than aesthetics?

After a hundred rounds back to back the barrel will be very hot, the shroud would be cooler if you were to lay your fore arm on it... But it takes intentional behavior to get one that hot in a tactical situation.
But if you ever burn yourself even very minor on a barrel, it is a lifetime lesson as is the hot burner on the stovetop... I used a single shot 12 for years that didn't have a forestock, just a wide rubber band on the barrel that you held by your thumb and forefinger... Brent |

Either apparatus is essentially useless on a police or defense shotgun. In the past 30 years I have seen the shotgun used in both applications on multiple occasions. IIRC, the greatest number of rounds fired in a shotgun fight was four. Ed Mireles may have fired 1-2 more than that in cleaning up the 'Miami Firefight'. Nobody I know has scorched their tender hide on a scattergun barrel, in training or actual use. Perhaps it has happened, but if this were a common occurrence I would have seen it or heard about it. Thankfully, I seem to have missed all the 'riot gun bayonet charges' as well.

After a handful of rounds back to back my 500 gets pretty warm, so I've thought about getting one (a heat shield). Its just habit to grab the gun by the barrel when setting it back in the gun rack at the range to switch to my sidearm.
Back on topic, the ATI stock mounted shell holder gets about a 5/10 from me. The shells are held too tightly in the holder. With all 5 shells in the holder is so tight that you need two hands to remove the first shell. I now keep two 00 buck shells towards the rear and two 1oz slugs towards the forward end with the open space in between. So I'm planning to either replacing it with the elastic version... instead of the current plastic junk... Or possibly getting a TacStar receiver side saddle holder and getting a cheek rest for the collapsible stock. Who knows. |

When I was Newbie, I purchased one of those slings that hold 20 rounds of ammo in elastic loops. The first time I swung the weapon, the sling hit me in the nuts. It was a painful lesson.
