Outdoor Channel Survival Science

Gang, just watched the show, Survival Science, on the Outdoor Channel. Season one, Ep. 1. Bears....

A father and son in Wyoming bow hunting had a Grizzly charge. Son ran toward the father with the bear behind him. Father with bow nailed the bear in the heart (one shot.) Bear tackled the son but stopped... then walked toward the father and dropped dead!!!

Happened in 2013 I think. They interviewed the father and son on the show.

So what has it to do with Tactics and Training?

Steel nerve and familiarization with ones chosen weapon.

Anyway, its a cool series with a nice looking couple!

Oh... and don't try to outrun a bear!

I'll be on the lookout. Thanks for the heads-up.

I don't need to out run the bear. I just need to out run whoever I am with...

"...Son ran..." First mistake. Yogi responded with the "There goes my dinner." response. At 35 MPH.

My father was jumped by a grizzly while fishing in Yellowstone. A ranger with a .357 magnum killed the bear when it charged him.

Many people here insist that something so small can't be used as grizzly defense, but look at what a cool headed ranger, and a hunter, are capable of doing.

It could be an interesting study to see if either of those two incidents were not killing attacks or a false charge of some sort.

The attack on the father/son did connect with the son. It tackled him and was starting to maul him. But the bear stopped, looked at the father, walked toward him, and then turned aside and dropped dead.

I just watched an episode on mountain lion attack. Interesting. The folks discussing what snubby to use for bear attacks in a recent thread should watch the show.

First the caveat that I did not see that show. I know I should take that type of programming as providing true cases and valid information, but I just can't seem to do that. I remember the "survival" show where the lost people had to survive on wild berries and grubs (and the dinners at the four-star hotel they really stayed at between takes). Poor things. Even if, for the sake of art, the actors would be willing to do a real survivalist bit, the unionized cameramen and the rest of the crew wouldn't put up with it. IMHO, it is almost all fake; amusing, even entertaining, but about as realistic as the small game hunting practiced by Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny.

This is not fake. They don't camp out or such. It's more or less science.

1st: Have the equipment and it doesn't have to be the biggest or loudest--I know a bowhunter who killed a black bear that was making a determined predatory attack, with a single 9mm bullet(from a Hi-Point pistol no less).
2nd: Know how your equipment functions-nothing is of value if you can't make it work.
3rd: Don't go 1/2 way, it's all or nothing from the animal's standpoint. Why should you hold back?

Hi, Deaf,

Thar looked like a normal hunt to my (Western PA) eyes, except for those BIG bucks. But I was not referring to the "home movie" sort of thing, but to the "survivalist(s) in the wilderness" shows with five minutes of rolling credits showing dozens of people (including, for one "survival alone" show, a choreographer(!!)) who supposedly weren't there. Nothing fake here, folks.

Jim,

Go past the first second or two in the film and you will see the trailer for the Survival Science.
