Carcano help please

My 6.5 shoots well but dosnt chamber smoothly most times. It seems that the top round is not sliding up under the bolt extractor easily. Can this be improved? Thanks

are you using round nosed or spitzer bullets?

Round, but the problem seems to be at the back not the front.

Is it just round #1 ... or does it happen with other rounds? Does this happen with all your clips or just certain ones?

I've not had your experience ... mine will feed #1 thru #6 ... or not at all. (I had a 91 Infantry Rifle that required my removing the bolt and manually hooking the round into the bolt face and reinserting the bolt. I finally found a bolt that headspaced properly and fed ... problem solved).

Just got it recently not much experience yet. Seems like the 2nd or 3rd round generally is a prob.

Do you think being more force full will help? I don't want to mess up the extractor though.

Check the extractor for burrs or gunk. Gently stone or clean as appropriate.

The Carcano has what could generally be described as "push/controlled round feed" extraction in that the extractor can either snap over the rim of a cartridge or have the rim slide up onto the bolt face and into the extractor.

I hear ya but not so keen on forcing the extractor over the case lip. Dosnt sound like good practice. Lets hear from others, that extractor would be a pia to replace!

Jimro is correct; the round is held by the clip for a good part of its forward travel and does not rise up under the extractor as in a Mauser; the rifle should feed fine in any case.

Interesting! Perhaps a more firm and quick action on my part will chamber the round better. I may be going too slow and over careful.

I only have experience with one Carcano, a short cavalry carbine, but that was one of the smoothest feeding bolt actions I have fired.

Others have suggested to just let the extractor snap over the case during the lock in. I'm not sure if this is good practice. Is this one difficult to replace? I know that some can be a pia!

I do NOT think you want to do that!!!! The previous owner may have possibly tried feeding her without a clip and has managed to mess up the extractor. I'd try being VIGOROUS with bolt manipulation because that's how they were designed to be used. (Not by holding the bolt knob with your thumb and first two fingers ... GRAB HOLD AND WORK IT).

Having said that, if this approach doesn't help your feeding problem ... you may be in the same boat I was in with my old '91.

I used to own a Carcano, and the only advice I can offer is try to clean up any rough spots or burs. The fit and finish on those rifles can be pretty rough.

OK thanks all! I worked the extractor, used some gun grease, and switched to a steel clip. That with more firm handling seems to have helped a lot!

Glad things are looking up. Sometimes these older girls need a little love and pampering. Afterall, they have been wall flowers for a long, long time in some cases.
