Budget 17HMR
Need opinions. Best bang for the buck on a bolt action 17hmr.Must be $300 or less, out the door.

Savage 93R17. Or a used CZ. Either way, really no such thing as a budget 17HMR when you also consider the cost of the ammo.

I recently bought a marlin 917vs with a scope for $300 and i love it. the savages are good to. the ammo is expensive though so you might want to look into that as well. it all depends on what you will use it for.

I had the chance to shoot a magnumlite 17 semi-auto w/graphite barrel definately not cost effective but feeds flawlessly (not like stock 10/22 magnum) and is a tack-driver. If I had money to burn I would grab one but my savage 917 outshoots it.

I love my marlin 917. (though to be fair, everyone I talked to before buying said that there really wasn't that much difference between Marlin and Savage... pick whichever you can get a better deal on... my two cents).

I bought my kid a Savage with the heavy stainless barrel and synthetic stock. The accuracy is p**s poor. I sent it back to Savage and they said nothing was wrong with it. They told me their rifles were only designed to shoot the 20 grain bullets and thats why it wouldn't shoot well for us. What a bunch of manure. I think it's that the synthetic stock is pretty crappy. On the other hand I have a BTVS with the thumhole stock in 22 mag thats very accurate. But I wouldn't buy another Savage product. The CZ 452 mentioned previously is an awesome rifle. Mine shoots one small ragged hole at 50 yards

Marlin 917 or the savage 93. I personally like the marlin better.

I was out shooting my Marlin 917 VS CF @ P-DOGS yesterday. It is fun. Can't complain on any point. I was a big holdout on buying a 17 HMR. Not a sucker for fancy new cals. This gun was on Cabela's 4th of July sale marked down from $299.00 to $199.00 and I had points saved so I had to get it...State Law! It shoots like a dream, and handels like an expensive longarm.

Thanks, to all. Wife has been watching this thread,so she can start looking for my Christmas gift. After reading the replies,I think she,s going with a Marlin 917. Does not matter what model,a wife buying a rifle for you is much appreciated,if you know what I mean.

i saw where cdnn is selling some type of ruger 10/22 barrel that will convert your 22 to 17hmr...........i know exactly nothing about this barrel, the conversion, etc......but the barrels are normally like 225 and theyre selling them for 60 or 70....so thats a cheap way to go, especially if you got the 10/22
