What choke is on a standard remington 870 and a standard mossberg 500?
If you just picked a standard remington 870 that does not have a screw in choke, what choke is the barrel?
If you just picked a standard mossberg 500 that does not have a screw in choke what choke is the barrel? I am guessing either open choke, improved cylinder choke, or modified choke. What do you think it is?

What length barrel? There really isn't any standard per se, but generally speaking re. factory barrels (i.e., not cut off):
18-20" Remington- old ones were mostly CYL, newer ones are mostly ImpCyl with a few being MOD 18-20" Mossbergs- all I know of are CYL Both brands- 26"-ImpCyl 28"-MOD or FULL 30" or longer-FULL lpl |

I am at work so I cannot look at my shotguns to find out.
Is the choke size always written on the barrel?

Look at the choke, if removable. Sometimes things get switched.

I have seen some mystery examples where it wasn't stamped though (either by design or accident). Have one at home that's a 20" RS express barrel from Remington. Typically these are improved cylinder and marked as such. I know some Cyl bore examples exist though. I had assumed my unmarked version was cyl bore 'til I gauged it and found it's IC but unmarked.

The only fixed choke I have is the Cylinder on the 18.5" Mossberg 500 and it's marked on the barrel.

Typically a 28" 870 was modified, 30" full, and 26" was improved cylinder. This was back in the day before choke tubes.
I recall this as being the standard when I worked as a gun salesman at what was then White Jones hardware store in Anderson, SC. back in 1974. It should be stamped on the barrel either with stars( Remington) or small letters on the Mossberg. |
