Considering a S&W 638?

I have been testing the Smith & Wesson Model 638. Pretty neat little gun.

I love the function of that shrouded hammer. However, if I were to buy this style of revolver I'd choose the 438 instead. I've seen too many instances of that S&W fake silver coating flaking off. The black anodized coating seems to be more durable.

If I were to buy a snub nose revolver it would definitely be one with the shrouded exposed hammer like the one in the video.

Does the 638 and 438 have an aluminum frame? If so what is the model number for a steel frame with the shrouded hammer?

Yes 638/438 share the same aluminum frame. Difference is in the finish. I believe the old steel-framed version was simply called the model 38.

I have often carried a Model 38 Airweight, predecessor to the 438 and 638, in a pocket holster. I prefer having the option to manually cock the hammer just in case I need to use it at an intermediate or longer distance.

I love my 638, bought it after I fell in love with the stainless 649 and wanted a lighter option for carry. For me it is the best of both worlds being able to pull and shoot with out worrying about the hammer snagging but I still have the option of going single action for more precise shots.

I have one of these, a 638 Airweight... and the paper in the box says it was tested by JESUS @ S&W. And when I touch off a +P round, I offer up a prayer as it kicks more than my .44 Magnums!! Lol!!!

I'm more of a Ruger fan, but even I can't argue that the LCR is better than these S&W that have that uh... shrouded hammer (if that's the term for it) that allow a SA pull.

I wish Smith would make a model in 9mm, better yet 40. Don't care if it uses moon clips, I'm not going to carry a moon clip around for a reload.

As for lower recoil loads, I really like the Hornady Critical Defense Lite for the .38. It's standard pressure and weighs 90 grains. Feels like shooting nothing.

The steel frame version of the Model 38 was the Model 49.

The Model 38 was the Bodyguard Airweight.

The Model 49 was just the Bodyguard, in stainless it was or is the Model 649.

I wonder if there is a tendency for things like lint to get into that shrouded area. I know that S&W has had this design for 50+ years now, but every time I see one I think about something getting into that space and causing the hammer to get blocked from cocking all the way back.

One of our officers carried a mod 49 in an ankle holster for his whole career and never complained of lint. He could pop that little revolver off his ankle and put five shots in a 3”circle so quickly. I carried a 60 as a back up or plain clothes weapon.
J frame revolvers are neat.

Been carrying a 637 for a couple years or so mostly in an ankle holster. Finish is still good. know some cam chip off. Mine has been fine. I can hit with this thing. Also have CT laser grips on it.

Great carry gun. I also use an LCP, this is my "big gun".

I think I get lint around the triggers of my carry weapons more than any other area. Too much oil collects it and I keep my handguns all well lubed.

I think that's why God invented air compressors and blow nozzles. Works great for blowing off excess oil.

I'm starting to think the same.

Looked up the 649, price was too high for me and idk what the recoil is like in that. Must be better than the .357 LCR as it's a heavier gun, but the 638 is very reasonable in price.

I'll be keeping an eye out for a used model.

I recently picked up a new Model 642 Performance Center 38+P and am quite enamored with the fit, finish, functionality and most especially the trigger. If I am able to determine to my satisfaction that all Smith Performance Center revolver triggers are a similar upgrade over the standard model, I will endeavor to only purchase the same going forward.

I have both the 638 and the 442, both are great little revolvers. I've also seen some posts about the grey finish flaking off the 638, its never been an issue with mine.

I always loved the look of the shrouded Model 638. I bought one about six years ago. It isn't very accurate at more than 7 yards (at least for me that is) but again it is not a target gun and more of an up close and personal SD handgun. I've got some Karl Nill grips on it which allows me to have a better grip on the gun.

I have CT laser grips on my 637. I have shot bowling pins at 25 feet hitting 5 out of 5. Not real fast, but DA.

You can’t lose with any J Frame. I like the 442. I could live with a 438 just fine. The only problem with J Frames is they are addicting.
