M1A barrel question

Can someone tell me the difference in barrel weight/contour between a Loaded model and a Scout model M1A?

Barrel descriptions for the Loaded version are pretty clear, medium weight match barrel. Aside from being shorter, I have not seen any description of the barrel on the Scout version.

How does the Scout barrel compare to the Loaded barrel?

Biggest difference is it's 4" shorter...

I suspect it's also a medium weight barrel... but probably not considered a 'match' barrel.

Could be wrong, but the last S.A. M1A "Scout" I saw at the range looked to have a standard-weight barrel, but was 18" instead of 22". It sure didn't look like a heavy contour 'Match' barrel.

Thinking about it... why would they put either a heavy and/or match barrel on what is supposed to be a lightweight rifle or carbine? That would make about as much sense as putting a match barrel on my Socom16. That isn't to say my Socom, or the Scout, are not accurate.

I see what you are saying, but that isn't really the role of a Scout rifle, is it?

Just trying to find out how the barrel is constructed and the best way is to compare it to a known construction.

Here is what I suggest you do, take a look at the Fulton Armory M1A / M 14 Barrel Selection. Look at the 18" and 22" barrels as to GI Contour, Medium Contour and the Heavy Contour barrels. The images will give you an idea of what the contours look like. I can tell you a GI Contour 22" barrel comes in weighing about 2.0 pounds. An 18" GI Contour comes in at around 1.8 pounds. I doubt going from a GI contour to a heavy contour will be adding much weight, maybe .250 pound? That being a pure guesstimate.

As to the "scout" flavors I believe they are all the 18" GI Contour parkerized carbon steel from Springfield when they leave the factory.
