Damaged rifling near muzzle. Approximate cost of fix?

Hey guys, we've got a rifle that appears to have some damaged rifling near the crown. I'm guessing it's been through some bad cleaning jobs with steel rods.

Anyway, from what gather the fix would probably be having a gunsmith lop off an inch of the barrel and getting it re-crowned.

Can anyone give me an approximation of the cost for something like this? $50 bucks, $200 bucks...?

I know this can vary, but just want a general idea before I talk to a gunsmith.

Thanks

You should be able to find a 'smith in your area to do it for a reasonable price... which will kinda depend on your area, so I won't quote a price.
If you're a DIY kinda guy, you can rent a muzzle cutter and do it yourself.

Cheers,
C

How bad is the accuracy? That is what counts, after all.

I had a .22 rifle with simular damage. Took it out to the range and documanted it's accuracy at 50 and 100yds. It shot just great and kept the targets as documention. I decided not to correct the problem. When I sold it, it was sold as is, pointed out the problem area, showed the guy the targets and told the guy I would guarantee it's performance. He took it and last I checked, he stil has it .....

Fifty bucks. The gunsmith runs some sort of a reamer and cuts away the offending rifling.

That's a counterbore, done commonly on old milsurps like Mosins...

What's the value of the rifle you're referring to?

If it's got real value, have it cut and re-crowned.

Probably $100-$150.

If you're brave, get a PTG crowning tool/cutter and the correct size pilot, and DIY. I've done a couple with excellent results.

Sure thing... based on my previous experience, pricing is reasonable and the tooling provided is first rate.
