How much ammo do you carry?

I am going on my first whitetail hunt this weekend and was wondering how much ammo to carry. I have a single shot .270 Win and have a 10 round cartridge belt carrier. I am thinking this is plenty. What about some of you?

Same as I carry - 10 rds should be 9 more than you need.

I am going to agree and disagree. I think 10 is plenty for the field.......one shot one kill, right? If, you are going far enough from home that it would not be feasible to drive back, I always take at the minimum a box. Why? What if you have a mishap and have to re-sight your gun in?

Agree as well - I was just thinking "carry" as in walking out to hunt. At camp, I usually have 40-100 rds, depending how far out in the sticks we are.

A box in the truck, 3 in the rifle and one in each pocket.

Same thing when toting the shotgun & buckshot.

I generally carry 3 or 4 (according to caliber) in the rifle of course and about 10 extra ones on the shell carrier on my belt. You say why so many in the woods, it only takes one to take the deer. I am a firm believer in being ready for whatever might come my way. Of course I have 20 or more at the truck or camper.

If I'm only going out for either the morning or the evening hunt, then just what my magazine holds. If it is an all-day hunt then I'll toss a few extra in the backpack. My sidearm will hold a full cylinder (6) and I may or may not have any extra for it.

If I do carry extra, it is not with the idea that I'll be needing it for actually shooting at game. The only reason I carry more than a full magazine load is for the remote possibility that I'll get in trouble and need to fire off shots to guide a rescue party. That I why I tend to only carry extra when I'm going off on an all-day hunt.

When I hunt the club I'll load 2 rounds in 06. Leave rest in truck. PS I carry
my Ruger 357 4in Security Six on my side & a speed loader, Nrver shot over one round & then go collect my deer ; )

i carry 2 bandolier slings full of slugs late in the season so when the does herd up you can lay down some lead haha

Carrying a TC Encore Pro Hunter "handgun" chambered in 7mm-08, 9 round cartridge carrier, one in the gun, so 10 rounds. I've never fired more than 4 rounds in an entire season so I'm guessing 10 is enough.

Off topic, but how is the 7-08 from the hand? Shoulder fired, nothing phases me, so I don't know how to relate that to a "pistol".

Deer hunting with a group of friends three or four boxes, one while actually hunting, a few more in the truck for the fun shooting of long range targets. My .243 was always the favorite everyone wanted to shoot because it was easiest to hit a gallon paint can at 600 yards.

Edited, I had to pull that, it's not something I should be talking about, I'd like to though.

Five in the rifle, five in the shell holder on the stock with any of my repeaters, one in the rifle and five in the shell holder if I've got my single shot that day.
One cylinder full with my revolver, or if I'm carrying my auto, one loaded mag in the pistol and a loaded mag in the holster.
I don't hunt far from the truck, so any other ammo is stored in the truck--usually the remainder of the boxes.

I hunt in a very remote area so I always plan as if I would be lost or stuck out in the woods for days..so have 4 in my rifle 20 0n my belt and a box in the truck in case of a re site. I also like yard dog carry my security six 4" with a speedloader in my pocket. I always plan on being stuck out there so I also have a metal match extra food, space blanket and garbage bags "they can be used for so many things".

What's in the gun, plus 1 reload.

That applies to my bolt rifles, pump and semi auto shotguns and revolver.

I carry what's in the gun, plus one reload most of the time.

A lot depends on what and where I'm hunting, but I don't use up a lot of ammo on a hunt. 1 shot, 1 kill most of the time.

I find it to be easier feeling than a rifle. There's plenty of movement available to dampen the blow, not like bashing against your shoulder. Not that the 7mm has a ton of recoil anyway, but it's enough that it would get old before I got through a box, I'm sure of that. The Encore is just fun. I've fired close to 30 rounds in one sitting, no pain, just fun.
