Winchester 1897 ???

While checking out the local gun shops today I stumbled onto a Winchester
1897. It looked just too good, possibly an older restoration??
S/N 92XXX ??
30" full choke barrel-blueing not to bad
Forearm very good condition
Normal wear on the bottom of the reciever from carry
Action solid, but could have used some lube.

Now,about the stock, Everything looked normal/correct according to the rest of the gun scratches, dents, wear, etc. BUT.. The Butt Plate was Plastic?? with the Winchester logo and was perfectly fitted to the gun.

Any info would be helpful.

Yes Winchester used hard rubber aka plastic buttplates on their model 97's.

Winchester logo hard urethane plastic or polymer replacement butt plates are common on these guns. The original plates were made from several materials; Winchester Marked Black Hard Rubber, Winchester marked Bakelite, horn, many of the trench guns from WW1 & 2 had steel butt plates.

With the age of the gun, it would not really bother me having a replacement butt plate on the gun, since that piece takes much abuse. Also, with the cost of $100 to $150 for a true original, polymer would be fine for me.

1897 pump guns are great fun, enjoy it if you buy it.

Good Luck & Be Safe

Thanks for the replies guys, after doing some searching last night, I managed to find some additional info. I did see a place that had the replacemnet "hard rubber" butt plates for $120.00 plus.

The price was 495.00(might be able to negotiate)+tax, I find '97s interesting and would like to pick one up at a reasonable price.
