Question on punching out Live Primers

I had reloaded about 50 - 60 44 mag rounds for my son . I used some old Winchester primers . We had maybe 5 misfires that did fire the 2nd time . I mentioned that I had at least another 40 -50 cleaned brass cases that I had primed . A guy at the range said I could safely punch them out with my depriming / sizing die . Can this be done ? Is it safe ?

Normally if a primer fires on the second strike, it means it wasn't seated deep enough to begin with. The first strike finishes the seating operation, and the second hit causes it to ignite.

If that is the case with your primed brass, you might we Ok with just seating the primers deeply enough....

But, if you are still determined to deprime the live primers, I suggest:
- use a decapping die (not the resizing die), give more room for gas to vent
- wear ear and eye protection, and a leather glove isn't a bad idea
- move the ram slowly to press the primer out

I have deprimed many live primers, and never had one go off, but there is always the first time.

I've removed many with my sizer/decapper die, but move slowly and expect a loud noise at any time. I always appreciate that little click as the primer is popped out, without exploding.

Just wear safety glasses, and was suggested a glove and you should be Ok.

Ditto the above and be gentle. I've never had any problems.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to wash those casings first? I do it anyhow before i reload. I would think that would help kill that primer, just to be on the safe side.
