need approx value, 375 H&H

Can someone give me an approximate dollar value for a rifle I have? It is a 375cal. H&H magnum, custom made with Mauser action, Belgian FN, I believe a commercial model. I was told it has a Douglas barrel when I traded for it 36 years ago. It has a Redfield mount with a Leupold "Vari-x" 3-9 power scope. The trigger is stamped "AFBER" and the trigger mechanism has "M" with an underline on it. It has "5.0.3.0." hand stamped on the under side of the receiver. I do not want to sell, just need insurance value.

Thanks,
Gary

PS: this a great forum!

If it was a rebarreled with a Douglas barrel then it isn't worth as much as it could have been. However if you can find out who did the work and they had any kind of good name it could increase the value. Without pictures it would be hard to say to actual value. However even with the scope I'd venture a guess of $6-900 based on your description. Leupold scopes are nice but the old Vari-X 3-9X40's can be had less than $200 in excellent condition. I'm guessing it would be about the same as what a guy could pick a Interarms MarkX up off of gunbroker for in the same chamber.

Taylorce,
Thank you, $600-900 sounds very good but reasonable.

"Custom" can mean a lot of things, from Bubba to a full blown JK Cloward museum piece.

Who customized it? Pictures would be great!

I have bought and sold several 375 H&H rifles. You reeeeeeeelly need to look at them to get a value in my mind.

photos of 375

Here are three photos of my 375 H & H "custom". I recently broke the stock and am in the process of replacing it. The original stock had been broken and re-glued apparently. It also had gotten bit in the forestock by a tent breaking bear. I hope this helps. This rifle is more useful than pretty, usually used as a backup.

Thanks for all of your help, this is a great site. The number of views is extraordinary!

.

After seeing the pics, I wouldn't bother with insuring it.

IOW, "shooter" value - with the Leupold, about $450, +/-.

Okay, $450 is fine, not selling it anyway.

Thanks,
Gary

Stock is junk obviously, but that possibly is more than a $450 rifle. Commercial FN actions will sell for $400+ to the right buyer. My best advice for that rifle is to take it to a gunsmith and get it checked out and restocked.

Order a Boyd's laminate stock and put a couple of crossbolts in it and have the smith bed it. Update the rings and bases to something with a little cleaner lines. Send the scope in to Leopold and have it gone through. Get it back in shooting condition and you'll be back in the ballpark of what I told you.

It's a shooter for sure.

Taylorce1,

Thanks, I am working on replacing the stock right now. Having a smith do it is probably best. Good idea about the scope. I will send it back to Leupold. The rifle has an unreliable aspect regarding accuracy and I often wondered if the scope was faulty.

Best regards,
Gary

The $450 sounds right if it needs any value assessment.

A gun safe is the best insurance though as one collector told me, I don't worry much about anyone steeling these guns, they are so odd you can sell them.

Gunbrocker is a good place to see what things go for but yours is such a one off non collector item it is probably impossible to get a reference value (stock broke, different barrel).

Custom guns typically don't sell or easily. You can spend 2K on a custom rifle and you may not be able to sell it for $400. I advise people to build a gun you intend to keep.

I can't offer a value suggestion because it would depend on a hundred variables.
If you really want to sell it put it on Gunbroker with a penny start. You will find exactly what somebody is willing to pay for it.

Saxon and RC,

Thanks for the feedback. I don't intend to sell it. I got it in a trade for cheap. Just curious what the value is, to include it with the other firearms for insurance value. I think $450 is just fine.

We actually use it a bit for a backup. We live in bear country and like to have some insurance leaning up against the door frames around the house. See our extraordinary video of a brown bear taking a moose in our driveway at; www.youtube.com then enter "bear moose driveway".

Happy Holidays!

Oh, if you just want to assign a value, you can say it's worth whatever you want. I have a safe full of million dollar guns.

Insurance Value is really dependent on your policy & carrier rules. I insure my weapons at replacement value, which in your case would be a lot more than $450.00. I would discuss the issue with your agent & try to insure it at a value equal to a replacement such as a Winchester Model 70 or a Ruger in the appropriate caliber.
