Shotgun requirements

On a single-shot shotgun, what is the minimum barrel length? What about any requirements for overall length? What about pistol grips? Are they legal for civilian use? I feel stupid for asking these questions, but I tend to deal with handguns more than shotguns. I'd like to have a relatively compact (but legal) shotgun around the house for varmints and self-defense.

On all shotguns, the mininum barrel length is 18". The overall length is 26". As long as the gun meets those measurements, you can put a pistol grip on it.
Always give the law 1/4" to 1/2" over these lengths to be safe.
