A K-22 / model 17 is chambered in 22LR. If it's a 38 special then it's a K-38 / model 14.
The serial number (K20XXX) dates it to 1948. For that time period the same serial number should also be on the underside of the barrel and back of the cylinder.

Side note: A K-22 / K-38 from early 1948 would likely have a tapered, thin barrel. Is there only 5 digits after the "K" in the SN or 6?

Hello

A friend of mine got a S&W from his father. His dad got it from a policeman in the 1960's and was reportedly "old" back then. I looked in the yoke and there is no model number stamped in it. I checked and the only things stamped are a Y and a 3 and a 2 with a circle around it. It has a pinned nonbull barrel. Sqaure butt grips. Marked .38 s&w special ctg. Honestly it looks like a model 10. Serial number is 4275xx Any guess to the year?

Sounds like your friend has a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th change, made between 1921 & 1927. This is the direct ancestor of the Model 10.

I have recently bought a Smith and Wesson 22 m.r.f. ctg revolver ,serial # 6k2XXX, model#48-2. Also has L or E 10 stamped above the model#, and also under the hand grips. The reason I say L or E is under the grips it looks like an E??. It was in a group of guns I just happened up on and bought. I am not a real gun guy just took a chance. I have a guy wanting to trade me a brand new in the box P345 ruger for it. Just don't want to give it away. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance Rob. Your Model 48-2 K22 Masterpiece Magnum Rimfire was manufactured in 1974, based on the serial number. The problem is that it should be a 48-4 if manufactured that year.
The E10 and other numbers or letters are assembly numbers used to track parts in the factory and are irrelevant once the gun is assembled. Only the model number and serial number have any relevance.

In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave values of $450 ANIB, $375 Excellent, $300 Very Good, $250 Good, $185 Fair and $100 in Poor condition.

A quick check on Gunbroker.com & gunsamerica.com show P345s for $450 to $480 and Model 48s from $700 to $900 but there are no bids, so these prices are probably high. I would trade it if the Ruger is a gun you actually want, as it will save you transfer and shipping fees. If you are just trading for tradings sake I would keep the S&W as it is uncommon and no longer produced.

Just to add a little,
A 48-2 in the same serial range (6Kxxxx) sold on Gunbroker recently. Though not listed as such, apparently the -2's do exist that late.

Checking completed auctions the "sold" prices ranged from a low of $495 to over $800.

The model 48 (not beat up) is a collectable and worth more than the Ruger, hence, him offering you a new one in exchange. But, like Radagast said, go for the one you like best.

That's a tough one. SCSW lists the "UAM" prefix as 1997, and the "VHN" prefix as 1998, with no further information. I guess you could infer that your pistol dates from those years, but I think it would only be a guess.

I'm fortunate to have found this forum. I would like to know what kind of S&W revolver I have and what year if possible.
It has a four inch barrel, double action, fixed sights, swing out ejector cylinder, no safety that I can see.

Right side of barrel stamped Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass USA. Last pat'd year Sept. 14-09 there is one Maltese cross at the beginning and at the end of the stamping.

Left side of barrel starts with a engraving mark than 38 S&W special CTG and again the engraving mark.

I found the serial number after taking off the grips on the bottom of the frame the first three numbers are 227, a matching number was located on the underside of the barrel visible when you slide the cylinder away only there is a letter B about one 1/4 inch in front of the number.

After examining the frame where the nipples are to align the grips there is a letter E and above that is I believe a #8. Also this is a round butt five screw revolver.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

joelsteinbach: 1972. With the right gunsmith and sufficient $ you can do just about anything, but it may not be cost-effective. What type of change are you looking to make?

I would like to add a bright (tru glo) front sight, It appearts that the front blade may be just forced, or friction fit. I shoot 148 HBWC and can only properly use them with a 38 spec. If I use this round in any of my 357's it tends to affect the fuction of the weapon after 30 or 40 rounds.

The front sight blades on later S&W's (like yours) are either pinned or forged as a one piece part of the barrel. If one piece a gunsmith would have to cut off the blade and mill a slot into the base and fit/pin a new blade in.
