Here is Yet Another 38 Special US Service CTG's Piece
Greetings, looks like I am one of many who has an old gun of a grandfather's. And it's also nice to carry on a nearly 18yo thread, lol. I have a few pics and will try to post what is pertinent.
1) 38 S&W Special U.S. Service CTG's. 2) Serial #10920X 3) It does have the screw in front of the trigger card 4) Latest patent date on top of the barrel is Feb 6, '06 5) Under the barrel, covered by the ejector rod when the cylinder is closed, there is also stamped a "B" a few spaces before the serial number that isn't in the other places where the serial number exists. 6) Also, on a place covered (when cylinder closed) by the part of the frame descending to the cylinder hinge, are the numbers 36487 7) There is some pitting inside the barrel so I wouldn't shoot it. Any information, particularly as to type and year of manufacture would be awesome. Okay, I am struggling to upload the pics. It has a rounded butt, grip of black plastic. |

SN's ran from R100000 in 1974 to R190000 in 1977.
So likely 1976 or so. |

Post 8541,
No info from the referenced book for that s/n range. Models: 36, 37, 38, 49, 50 and their pre-model versions 1950-1969 1-786544 (no prefix) Approximate manufactured dates: 1950 1 1952 7369-21342 1953 28916 1955 55050-75000 1957 117770-125000 1962 295000 1969 786544 Supica, Jim; Nahas, Richard. Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson) (p. 489). Gun Digest Media. Kindle Edition. Sometimes photos will help of the firearm and its serial number. I've come across folks who didn't see a letter within a serial number; mis-count how many total digits; not see a stamped model number; or mistake a manufacturing number for a serial number. mistake the firearm for a different size or model. Regarding the "book", it seems the authors published what info they had at the time and admitted the info could be incomplete, short of erroneous. Perhaps a 41xxx s/n could be somewhere between 1953-1955, but I'm no expert and didn't write the book.
