Hello,
Would love some info on a .32 S&W long, H.E. 5 screw, with a strain screw, Serial # 2170xx. 4 inch barrel. Grips cover the butt, and have a target with bullet holes in a circle.(on the grips that is.) Thanks |

By the serial number, I hope I have identified your revolver properly as a:
.32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 5th Change The book says it's actually a 4.25" barrel. 160,499 of these made between 1910 and 1917, serial range ran from 102501 through ~263000, it would appear that yours was a little closer to the end of that range than toward the beginning.

That's a very late 1973 on that Model 19-3.
I've got one of those myself.

Two S&W's
I have inherited some Smith and Wesson revolvers and two of them I have no earthly idea what they are and was hoping someone could help identify them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1.) S&W 38 Special with a square butt and NO emblems or identifiers other than the words "Smith and Wesson" on the left side of the barrel and "38 S&W Special CTG" on the right side of the barrel. There are four screws on the right side - none on the left. Serial number is 334135 on the bottom of the grip frame and B 334135 under the ejector rod. The three photos are of this one. wood grip.JPG wood grip1.JPG wood grip2.JPG 2.) S&W 38 Special with a square butt. S&W emblem on right side and "Made in USA". Three screws on right side and none on left. "Smith & Wesson" on left side of barrel and 38 S&W Special CTG." on right side of barrel. Serial number is S 904035 on bottom of grip and 904035 and then what looks like a partial diamond that is not completely stamped at the far right under the ejector rod. Since I'm only allowed three photos, I guess I will have to start another post and include the photos of #2 Like I said, ANY help will be greatly appreciated. |

The first gun is a Hand Ejector Military & Police, Model of 1905, 4th Change. This gun evolved in to the Victory model, and eventually, the Model 10. It's a fixed sight, K-frame .38 Special. It is the most popular single model handgun in history with an estimated six million of them made. The book indicates only a serial number "range" for all the HE M&P Mod 1905 4th Change guns, 1915-1942.
However, we can get "close" on dates by comparing the serial numbers to factory letters from S&W historian Roy Jinks. As your 334135 is earlier than my 357xxx, and I have a factory letter on mine, I can tell you that my revolver was shipped from S&W in the spring of 1921. I found a factory letter for another revolver with a 290xxx and it was shipped on June 4th, 1918. So it's safe to say that your revolver was shipped between 1918 and 1921. The second gun's serial number shows as 1966 or 1967, it is a Model 10. The grips are not original to the revolver. I do not know much about stag grips. (okay, I'll admit it... I know absolutely nothing about stag grips) You can get a factory letter yourself for either or both revolvers by contacting Roy Jinks through Smith & Wesson. It's a $50 charge for this service, but the letter will tell you the date it was shipped and to where it was sent, along with all the features it originally had when that happened. Mr. Jinks also includes an historical recap of the model itself.

Hello Sevens -
Thank you so very much for your time and effort in helping to identify these two S&W's. There are a total of four Smiths in the bunch but we have documentation - sort of - verbal relatives identifications to identify the others. Again thank you so very very much. |

It's looking like a 1959 born-on date.

s/w serial number
a buddy has one he bought new in 1961. serial 48295 under the crane? e 32684. i know pricing is just a guess but bluing has some wear, less than 1/2 box of ammo fired for sure. low to high pricing would be very helpful. then we could make our own wag on a price.

Neither of you guys think to add a model number? Caliber? Short description of any manner?
The CNY is newish, newer than my 2nd Edition, so made after 2000. The other one, is it a J-frame, snubby? You aren't exactly clear about WHICH number was under the crane -- we need the number on the butt of the grip. Under the crane should be a Model number... maybe.

If that is indeed a FIVE digit serial number after the alpha "k" and you didn't forget a digit, then the big book says it's a 1948 build.
You've got a genuine sweetheart right there!

I *think* that would be 1954 production, but the index is a little fuzzy on that.

The big book says it was built in 1971, and leads me to believe that it was late in 1971 at that.
Yours is gorgeous!

I recently picked up two .22 LR's: a 17-3 and an 18-3.
17-3: K845xxx 18-3: 8K97xxx If someone could tell me the production dates that would great! I think both should between 1967 and 1977, being -3. |
