That is not the serial number. It is located on the underside of the frames grip butt. You may have to remove the grips to see it. See pic.

The book says 1966 is most likely.

I picked up one of these (later than yours, mine is ~1974 vintage) just this summer and I've had an awful lot of fun with it. I've been shooting .357 Magnum for a long time, but my 6-inch 28-2 handles my heaviest loads better (and more pleasantly) than any of my other .357 Magnum revolvers. I had been pining over a .357 chambered Ruger Redhawk for quite some time, but those were made in notoriously short supply. After the first range trip with my 28-2, I quit worrying about ever buying a .357 Redhawk.

I find it to be just a bit of an ugly duck, but it's a workhorse and sure is a lot of fun to shoot.

I didn't think it would be that old. Other than some wear around the barrel it seems quite well taken care of over the years.

I've read this other place that it would handle fully loaded .357 ammo well. I look forward to try this out! It's to dark to go out and shoot here in the afternoons during the winter so I will have to wait until the weekend.

64-3 with serial number 1D76XXX is showing as 1979 or 1980 in the SCSW.

I'd be happy to have a K-frame of that vintage.

Yours should have a pinned barrel.

Assuming there is no letter prefix (such as K,C or D) it would be a 38 Military & Police made in the mid 1930's.

38 Military & Police 3rd Change. Serial numbers ran from 146900 in 1909 to 241703 in 1915.
So, 1909 would be a safe bet.

I acquired a S&W 681-1 .357 SN AUR9226 from my father in law who is retired law enforcement. He doesn't recall the year it was manufactured or in which year he received it. Was hoping someone could shed some light on the SN for me. Thanks in advance.

Actually, I find this to be one of the easier ones.

Smith & Wesson moved to the three-letter prefix on serial numbers starting in 1980 with the (then brand new) L-frame revolvers, of which yours obviously is. The 681 is the fixed sight version of the far more popular 686, and produced in WAY less numbers. In my travels, the fixed sight 581 and 681 revolvers would be considered "RARE" compared to their adjustable sight counterparts.

The book says that AVBxxxx was produced in July '87, and yours precedes that by a smidge. So early or perhaps spring 1987 is a very safe bet for it's production date.

The book also suggests a total production of the "Distinguished Service Magnum Stainless" to be at (approximately?!) 53,180.

i have a nickle plated smith & wesson 5 shot top break with very little wear . hard rubber grips serial # 75xxx can any one tell me something about it.?
it is chambered for 38 s&w. last patent date was 1884. is there black powder ammo for this or should i keep it as a wall hanger?

Based on the serial number and patent date it's likely a 38 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model (concealed hammer and grip safety). Serial numbers ran from 42484 in 1890 to 116002 in 1898.

As for shooting it, couldn't tell you one way or the other whether it would be safe or if commercially produced black powder ammo is even available.
