Jim, Most appreciative of your reply and wealth of information. Shortly after I posted, I realized it was not stainless but probably nickel. Do you have a sense of its value or if it can be fired? Again, thanks ever so much for your time and trouble!

Without examining it I couldn't tell if it's safe or not.
As far as value, with the refinishing, maybe $300 or so.

My wife and I bought a little J Frame .38 special new from a shop back in the mid 90s when we lived in CA. The owners manual didn't make the move from CA to ME.

The gun hasn't been fired in over 10 years. I'm trying to figure out what model it is so I can possibly order/download the owner's manual. There is no model number stamped in the frame near the cylinder pivot point. All I have is a serial number that begins with CCU1XXX.

Can anyone help?

It's a model 442. Serial number dates it to around 1998.
The model number should be stamped on the frame just forward of the cylinder visible only when the cylinder is open.

It's odd that there's no model number there. The serial number is present at that location but no model number.

I have a Smith and Wesson Model 36 1 7/8" barrell in excellent condition. Serial Number is AND0301.
Can anybody help me with the date of manufacture?

It is a CTG 38 special model 10-2: Serial no. on butt of the pistol is C561XXX. 9 and a N and 145XX is under the grips. Would like to know a little more history and insured value of the piece. It has some slight corrosin at the trigger guard. What could be used to remove this without damaging the finish?

I'm looking at buying a S&W model 442. The serial # is CCC4XXX. Can this handle +P ammo? It isn't marked on the barrel like newer models. The owner says that it should be able to handle +P but I want to make sure before I buy it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Early production. Grips are not original although they look like they might be Ropers. Should have come with "coke grips", they run $400 to $500 dollars themselves.
S&W did not start marking them as model 29's until about SN S184000 so that one should be a model NT-430 (Pre 29, not model marked). So, the model 29 labeled paperwork would not be correct for it either. If the box is original it will have the same serial number hand written on the underside of the box in white marker. The red felt is not original either, it should be blue. It would have come with a SAT (sight adjustment tool). That would be a $100 to $150 item also.

1961/62.
About $300 to $400. Removing the corrosion can cause more damage.

CCC4XXX

The SN dates it to 1997 so if it's a 442-1 it is +P rated.

Just looking for year of manufacture and ballpark worth. Based on posts, I suspect between 1920 and 1922. Serial number (from handle frame, rear face of cylinder, and bottom of barrel) is 394670. I believe it is nickle plated, and has a pearl handle. It has some tarnish but otherwise is in good shape.

I am considering buying a 6 inch barrel nickel-plated S&W 586 with serial number ADN3831. Can anyone tell me when it was manufactured and if there are any issues I should be concerned about? Thanks.

Smith & Wesson 32 long CTG Serial #394670

.32 Hand Ejector Third Model.
Serial numbers ran from 263001 in 1917 to 536684 in 1942. SN 321000 was in 1920.

1983.
There was a recall for 586/686/581/681 no dash and -1's many years ago. The primer from a certain brand of 125gr ammo could flow back into the firing pin bushing and tie the gun up. S&W would replace the bushing. It's very unlikely you'd ever have that problem and if you did the recall is still active. Modified guns received a "M" stamp near the model number.

I have a Model 37 Chief's Special with a serial number of: J1348XX that I inherited at my father's passing along with the original box. From this forum I see it was made between 1958 and 1962. I note that is does not have Diamond designs around the handle screws. Is that common? Does anyone have a more specific mfg date? Thanks in advance for any help provided.

J1348XX = 1973.
Diamond grips were discontinued around 1968.

Without a "J" prefix would be 1958-62.
