Pictures help a lot and confirm what you already found out.

The first is a 38 Double Action 3rd Model.
SN's ran from 119001 in 1884 to 322700 in 1895.

The second is a 38 Single Action 2nd Model.
SN's ran from 1 in 1877 to 108255 in 1891.

Readily available S/N

They are readily available. These guys are just going to the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson (SCSW) and finding them for those who are asking. Some of the S/N do get a bit confusing but you will learn to get around in the book. It is a GREAT reference book to have and a good read of history for a handgun owner, go to Amazon and buy it, you won't regret it.

Gifted .38

My father just gave me a S&W .38 that he said my great uncle carried in WWII. The problem is the box and paperwork are from the 80s. The revolver is stamped with S&W logo and Springfield MA and also a stamp that stats it is property of US Government. Serial number is v 368183. Can anyone tell me the year this was made? I will ask S&W for the detailed history but will save the $50 bucks if it was made in 1982. Thanks.

Barrel length, type of finish, any original packaging and condition will determine value. Without knowing any of those it could be anywhere from $400 to $1K.

Not sure of model appears to be a masterpiece design maybe a model 16 or k 32 but has only a 2 " barrel ss# on yoke is J4538. Grips are walnut and are rounded off like model 13, but I can't find that the 13 was chambered in 32 cal. Number on bottom of grip is 641xxx

With that serial number it would be a .32 Regulation Police.
It's built on the improved I frame.
SN's ran from 536000 in 1946 to 712953 in 1960.

Model 31 is what the Regulation Police became known as when S&W began stamping models numbers around 1957. If yours has model 31 stamped on it then it would date between 1957 and 1960. If not, then between 1946 and 1957.
Value ranges from around $300 in Good to $500 in Excellent.
The 32 Hand Ejector series shared the same serial number run so only S&W knows how many were actually made.

Later model revolvers also had the SN stamped in the yoke area but on earlier guns it was assembly numbers.

re:S&W Model 10 ??

I have a friend that likes to give me small tasks. Recently, he has aquired what seems to be a S&W model 10. I don't know much about Smiths, however he wanted me to find out the production date. Problem is, there are three different numbers on this particular piece. One on the yoke and two on the grip plate. There are no letters whatsoever. Can someone please help.

If it;s not to much trouble I'd really like to know about what year my Mod 36 is. It's a 2" pinned barrel with flat release square butt with diamond grips. Serial # 185xxx. Thanks

I'm new to revolvers and not familiar with how S&W does their serial numbers.
I purchased a very nice Model 19-4, blue, 4 inch yesterday at a gun show and am curious about its history.
The serial number on the yoke is 52K1678, but when I remove the grips, I see this number again on the very bottom of the butt, and
on the frame, under the grip I see 04550.
What is the purpose of the second number and does one of the numbers denote date of manufacture?
Thanks

I have no idea how long your father had it but the gun was made in 1956.

S&W has used many locations for the SN but the underside of the grip butt is the one constant (with one minor exception). The other number(s) are assembly and inspectors.
