My mother gave me a Smith & Wesson .38 Special CTG that she said was her uncles and I am trying to date it. It has a 3 1/2 inch barrel and the serial number is V 5958xx I'd appreciate any help.

Hey guys I have a good friend who has a 686-3 and is curious as to its manufacture date. We have it narrowed down to 88-94 but he would like to get a little closer if possible.
He said the SN is BEP 38XX.

A 38 S&w nickel plated 4 inch pencil barrel. Has a lanyard loop on the butt, smooth wooden grips. On the butt reads V 4331xx, same number on cylinder. Frame has KQ 87988. Can you identify?

It's a 38 Military & Police "Victory" model made for the Military during WWII.
Serial numbers ran from V1 in 1942 to V769001 in 1944.

He said the SN is BEP 38XX

Late 1989.

On the butt reads V 4331xx

been trying to catalog my weapons..... cant find much info on
S AND W 38 CAL revolver SPECIAL CTG serial number c384xxx

from what i have read it is the 384,000th made in this series, when they reached 1 million units, they renamed it the V series and started over.....

any thoughts as to age and value

Serial numbers for the 38 Military & Police series guns started at 1 in 1899 and ran to 999999 in 1942.
Then started the V prefix from V1 in 1942 to V811119 in 1945.
Then the S prefix from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948.
Then the C prefix from C1 in 1948 to C999999 in 1967.
Then the D prefix and so on...

Value depends on condition but ranges around $400.

Trying to find out production year for this 36-1 serial # 43xxx. Right below the serial it has a J for "J frame", then next to that it's stamped "G6". I'm not real into revolvers, but it belongs to one of my clients, and i'm trying to gather info while cleaning it. It's about 98% condition. It's not all original as it has a Herrett's grip on it, but it does have the original box, warranty card, & instruction sheet. Possible value without factory grips? Any help would be appreciated.

My dad has my great grandfathers hand gun and would appreciate any information. It is a 38 and under the grips on the but has "v" on one side of the lanyard swivel and the numbers 3655xx on the other side. It looks like there is a small P stamped on the very edge. Also says converted by cogswell & harrison. Again, I realize you all receive these requests fairly often, but appreciate any information you may have as it. Thanks.

It's a "Victory" model made during WWII.
SN's ran from V1 in 1942 to V769000 in 1944.
What distinguishes yours from regular US "Victory" models is the Cogswell & Harrison marking. S&W sold quite a few of them to the British as the model .38/200 (K-200). Those where chambered in 38 S&W.
Following the war a lot of the guns were reimported back to the US and C&H would convert them from 38 S&W to 38 Special.

Maybe you can help me. My wifes cousin asked for information on a Smith & Wesson. It's a 44 Special pre-war I believe with no ejector rod shroud. It's a nickel finish with about 6 1/2 inch barre. The number on the Butt of the gun starts with 24. The number on the cylinder crane starts with 25. Can you date this revolver? Thanks

The no ejector rod housing most likely makes it a .44 Hand Ejector 2nd Model.
Serial numbers ran from 15376 in 1915 to 59000 in 1940.
If the SN is 24XXX then it's pre 1926.

thanks Jim. Also, would anyone know if and where I could get some factory wooden grips. Someone put rubber on this gun, nice grips but I like the wooden ones. I assume k frame grips are all the same size regardless of calibre.
