Smith and Wesson serial number search

I picked up a S&W Model 10-7 Yesterday and have been trying to date it.

SN is 4D502XX

Your 10-7 (and any other Smith with an SN starting with 4D) is from 1979. The 10-7 was introduced in 1977 and succeeded by the the 10-9 in 1988. What about the 10-8, you ask? In the case of the Model 10, S&W used certain "dash" numbers for the tapered barrel versions, which yours is, and different numbers for the heavy barrels. So, the tapered barrel 10-4 was replaced in sequence by the 10-5, 10-7, 10-9 and 10-11. The heavy barrel 10-3 similarly spawned the 10-6, 10-8, 10-10, and 10-12.

Something not right here - are you getting that SN off the butt of the gun, and, if so, is what you typed correct?

The Model 64-3 was produced from 1977 to 1988; up to 1983, when S&W switched to the current "3 letters plus 4 numbers" serial number format, a 64-3 would have had an SN in the form of 1 or 2 digits, followed by a "D", followed by 5 or 4 digits, respectively.

If yours is post-83 it should have 3 letters, not two, and I don't believe an SN starting with a "C" would be correct - they didn't get to "C" numbers until 1996. Is it possible the SN starts with an "A" or a "B"?

I just acquired a Smith and Wesson that has "Regulation Police" over "38 S & W CTG" on the side of the barrel. The number on the grip is 7791. The number when you open the cylinder is 1358 while the number on the bottom of the barrel is 7791. Any info about this gun would be great. I have no idea the model and I don't know which is the actual serial number.

"Regulation Police" over "38 S & W CTG"

It's a .38 Regulation Police (prewar). It became the Model 33 when S&W began assigning model numbers around 1957.
The chambering is 38 S&W, not to be confused with the more common 38 Special. They are not interchangable.
The legal SN is the one on the grip butt (7791). On older guns the SN was also stamped on the barrel, back of the cylinder and a couple other spots. In this case the 1358 number on the frame forward of the cylinder is an assembly number.
Serial numbers ran from 1 in 1917 to 54474 in 1940. Yours is likely pre to early 1920's.

Wow! Thanks for the info! I had no idea what it was. I was thinking maybe a pre model 10. The guy I got it from said it was made in 1919 but I wasn't sure. At least now I can look up the value to see what I got. I knew the cylinder would not hold a 38 spl. The guy I got it from thought it was and when I showed him one wouldn't fit, he dropped the price.

I was wondering if someone could help me out with some information on a revolver. I have a chance to buy a smith and Wesson revolver and I would like to know how old it is. It is obviously and older gun. The writing on it says 38 s&w special u.s. service and the number on the bottom of the grip says 71717. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty sure it's a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905.
Serial numbers ran from 62450 in 1905 to 73250 in 1906.

I've had this for a long time but my old brain doesn't recall - know it is at least 30 yrs old ( P & R'ed revolver).

I'm a bit curious as to how old it is, the serial# seems low but it does not have the flat cylinder latch.
Looks good, got it for $375 OTD

Hey gurus of serial numbers. I was sent here by a fellow member to see when my S&W 469 was manufactured. Granted it is not a revolver but I do own a S&W 642 that will keep it company if that helps ease your conscious.
