38 SPL M&P 4th gen?
I've read a good few post in this thread so I think I've got it narrowed down but would appreciate verification
Per the box it is a 38 Military & Police 5" serial# 541977 That would make it a 4th gen 1915-1945. With the serial number probably late 30s-early 40s? 4th gens have the upgraded safety so it is safe to have all 6 loaded? Don't use plus ammo? Beyond that is there any safety concerns I should know as I regularly shoot it with a standard 136gr and have used it to teach my kids to shoot. It was my dad's gun and spent most of its life in a leather holster in the top of the closet. My best guess from the gunbroker, gunsamerica is it is worth 500-700 though I may be over estimating the condition. Does having the box and cleaning rod increase the value? Last edited by Glenn E. Model 65-1
Hello everyone. I found this forum as I was searching for information on a S&W 65-1 that I picked up from a friend a few years ago. As I was searching, I figured out that I have an early model (-1) with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder chambers.
It is a 4" barrel model. It is in perfect condition except for the side plate, where someone engraved numbers and initials. I am trying to decide if I want to have it repaired by Smith and Wesson. They provided me a quote a few years ago of $200 to replace the sideplate and refinish the gun. s/n 1D16XXX When was it made? Any idea on value? Attachment 77928 Last edited by Glenn E. The 4th Change new style hammer block was in 1944. Prior to that if dropped on the hammer it could fire. No +P. It's great you have the box and cleaning rod and that adds more value but I noticed what appears to be some pitting/corrosion on the barrel so that will bring the price down some. Quote:
SN's ran from K288989 to K317822 that year. If the original barrel was 6" it would be a K-38 Masterpiece (pre model 14), 4" or less would be a K-38 Combat Masterpiece (pre model 15). Quote:
S prefixes ran from S62469 to S333454 and S811120 to S999999. Quote:

Thanks Layton!
Early 30's means my dad wasn't the first owner. I may shop it around and see what I can trade for it, as it has no sentimental value to me. Again thanks for your information. |

Your pics show as a red X for me. If the side plate was not engraved and with the box/accessories, maybe $450. It's not really worth the $200 to replace the sideplate though. Quote:
SN's ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948. It went on to become the Model 10 when S&W began assigning model numbers around 1957. BTW, barrel length is measured from the face of the cylinder to the end of the barrel. Quote:

It's hard to put a value on a gun with cosmetic damage because it may bother some folks more than others. Quote:

These were sold to the British from 1940 to 1945. Yours dates from the first or second year. I really don't know what the value on it would be but based on the condition, less than $500.... Note, the chambering is 38 S&W, not to be confused with 38 Special. Quote:

Needing a date on an I-frame, 32 S&W long Regulation & Police Target, 6" barrel with adjustable rear sights, serial number 5049XX. Best guess is somewhere mid-late 20's to mid 30's. Would like to narrow that down if possible.
Any help is greatly appreciated. |

However, it does list some sold to the MSP in 1929 in the 508000 to 509000 serial number range. Jim |
