Take the SN from the underside of the frames grip butt. If you have target grips, you'll have to remove them to see it. Otherwise, -2's ran from 1961 to 1967. Quote:

How about S 869xxx ...
but the model number is unknown to me. On the yoke there are some numbers: 35713, but no "Mod XX"
it's a stainless steel revolver Thanks, Vlad |

Serial numbers ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948. It's not stainless steel but either factory nickel or aftermarket refinished. Jim |

Thanks!
so, does the lack of model number, implies that it was made in 1946? Since as I have read on the internet, from 1946 to 1958 S&W did not indicate the model # on the revolver and the serial is close to the beginning of production.

No S&W's made prior to 1957/58 have model numbers stamped on them.
That said, 1946/47 would be a safe bet. Jim |

The numbers on the butt of any S&W revolver, of any age, are serial numbers.
Various S&W's of varying ages have the serial number (or a part of it) on up to 6 or 7 different spots. (Look at an early post-WWII K-frame K-22, for example.) However, the numbers found hidden on the frame when the yoke closes are sometimes assembly numbers, not serial numbers. Post-1957 revolvers will also have the model number and any dash number in that location as well. -K |

I have an old Smith and Wesson that I believe is a K frame, passed down several generations through my family. It has signs of significant wear, but seems all original and is supposed to be anywhere from 80 to 100 years old. The Serial Number is 50488(the last two digits I am not 100% sure of, they look like 88 but there is some possibility I am incorrect), I would very much appreciate any information, date of manufacture(or approximation), the caliber, price(although I will not be selling). Here are some pictures. Thank You

BlakeC,
It's a .32-20 Hand Ejector Model of 1905, 3rd Change. Serial numbers ran from 45201 in 1909 to 65700 in 1915. It's a K frame and the chambering is for the 32-20 Winchester cartridge (32 Winchester). Jim |

It would be a model 19-3. Value depends on condition and barrel length and could range from less than $400 to more than $600. Jim |

Thanks a bunch Jim.
It's a 2" barrel and the gun is mint, except for the grips. They are delaminating an need to be changed. Thanks again. Fern |

You'll need to call S&W customer service and they'll give you the DOB free over the phone. S&W 1-800-331-0852 (USA) Mon-Fri 8:00AM-8:00PM Eastern Time Quote:
A586xxx is not a valid SN. You might want to recheck it. Remember to take it from the underside of the grip butt. If you have target grips you'll have to remove them to see it. Jim |
