Serial numbers ran from 322701 in 1895 to 539000 in 1909.

Oh god I would have missed that lol yes it is useless for my Victory but do you know how I can get a better idea what the year is? I did read over the Victory section and it didnt help either. Could I email s&w? Also if I did find a date or whatever could I find out where it was issued or is that impossible?
BTW. Only a **** pot on the bottom of the grip no other markings but S# if that helps.

My understanding is that you can call S&W Customer Service - probably email is OK as well - and they'll give you a date over the phone based on the SN, if they can. Anything beyond that is going to be a $50 Factory Letter, and I don't know how much information is provided on the Victory models. My guess would be that the actual details on issuance would be in the Army records (if at all), not with S&W.

Thanks a lot I'll have to see what I can. I didn't put my S# because it's almost like a treasure hunt right now

out of the 20 some guns its my most favorite. If it was issued to a guard or something I would assume there wouldn't be documentation of some sort?

Yeah, I understand. Unfortunately the book only has the range I listed. You could try calling S&W Customer Service.

I have a S&W safety hammerless revolver top break .32 S.N. 171***
also another revolver top break .38 S.N. 251***

Could someone help me with production dates?

I have just come into possession of a S&W .38 Snubbie, I'm pretty sure it's a fairly new Model 10. It has the firing pin on the hammer. Ser# CBA02XX.

Would someone please date this for me? Thanks.

The 32 Safty Hammerless would be a 3rd Model. Serial numbers ran from 170000 in 1909 to 242981 in 1937.
I'm assuming the 38 is a Safety Hammerless also, it would be a 5th Model. Serial numbers ran from 220000 in 1907 to 261493 in 1940.

If it's a Double Action, it would be a 3rd Model. Serial numbers ran from 119001 in 1884 to 322700 in 1895.

1996.
The firing pin moved from the hammer to the frame in 1997.

Also, I have the original blue box; is the date shown (in code or otherwise) anywhere on the label?

1999.
For date shipped, look under "spec ord" line, there is a 4 digit number. The first # is the year and the next three are the julian date (days into the year).
Example, for this case, 9031 would be 1999 January 31.
That said, if the gun actually was a spec order then the number there will mean something else.

D574xxx would be 1973-74. The range was D510001 to D659901, so you're pretty close to the middle. The info in the book is easily understandable by anyone with even a basic knowledge of guns. It may not be worth purchasing if you've only got one or a few Smith revolvers, but if you're planning on getting more or are interested in their history generally it's very good value for money.

Did you get that number from the underside of the grip butt?
603xx would date to 1955 which was before S&W started stamping them with model numbers.

Thanks for the fast response. This is my only S&W at the moment but I am looking to get as much info to sell it. I am inheriting my father's gun collection but he only has one .357 S&W so I guess it might not be worth picking up just yet.

Only to confuse it further.
The serial number must have more than just 5 numbers in it if it is model number stamped.
Is there any letter prefixes with that number?
The underside of the grip butt (not the grip itself) is where the SN is located.

Okay I have clarification...the number on the yoke is 603XX and the same as stamped on the side of the grip. On the base of the grip it is stamped 224JXX. I had to contact the owner. Also he tells me it is a sqaure butt if that matters. Thanks.

Okay, that clears it up. It was made in the 1971/72 time range.
