Managed to figure out all mine using Google except one. S&W M38, no dash, SN 647XXX, (on bottom of grip frame, no number other than MOD-38 in yoke cut). I figured out it was a Michigan Police Supply gun because it is blue with the stainless cylinder. Anybody got any info, year and such? Thanks

Model 38's were made from 1955 to 1999 and have aluminum alloy frames.

JimWood: Are you taking the serial number off the butt of the gun? The numbers you have there don't appear to match anything in SCSW. The SN should be either 1 to 5 numerical digits, or an "L" followed by 1 to 4 digits. If the "1203" you mention is in fact the SN, then it would indeed be an earlier version, likely shortly after the model introduction in 1952. Value depends on condition, but in general Model 40s appear to command higher prices than similar revolvers, with one in excellent condition being worth several hundred dollars.

The model 40C (.40 semi auto) was made from 1995 to 1998.
I don't know much about the Sigma series so I can't offer much help.

To get a closer date you'd need to call S&W. They'll give you the DOB free over the phone.

I have a revolver I don't know much about if someone could help. on the side it says 32 long serial number 55xxx. it has patent dates on the top of the barrel the most recent date is 1903. any idea what its worth? looks to be in good condition.

1) Is it a S&W revolver?
2) Is it a modern swing out cylinder or top break?
3) If a top break, is it a double or single action and hammer or hammerless?
4) How many rounds does it hold?

I found a picture of what mine looks like. Not actually my gun. I believe mine looks a little better condition.

It's a .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903, 3rd Change.
Serial numbers ran from 51127 in 1906 to 95500 in 1909.

Value, of course, depends on condition and ranges from ~$300 in good to $400+ in excellent.

Milady purchased two pistols from her parents before they passed, and have passed them on to our kids. Both wanted to know when they are made, so I told them I'd ask the experts. Can someone help us narrow down the ranges?

The first is a Military and Police or a Model 10, depending on age. It's serial number is C391xx, and has the number "85972" stamped under the cylinder arm.

I think the second is a K38 Target Special or a Model 14 (depending on age), serial K2315xx. It has 72539 stamped behind the cylinder arm.

SN's ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.
Military & Police until S&W started stamping model numbers on them ~1957.

SN's ran from K231256 thru K266164 in 1955.
If 6" barrel then K-38 Target Masterpiece until ~1957. 4" barrel was K-38 Combat Masterpiece (model 15).

Serial numbers ran from 1 in 1917 to 209791 in 1946. That said, serial numbers 1 thru ~169,959 were made between Sept 1917 and Jan 1919.

4" barrel, SN 52830 from the butt, front face of cylinder and behind hooded extractor rod, barrel says 38 S&W SPECIAL CTG. Grip has single screw in the center. On the face of the cylinder it also has B<>, sort of a diamond shape. Non adjustable sights.

Any info on age and whether it will handle plus P's would be appreciated.

You have a model .38/44 Heavy Duty. It's a 38 special on a 44 cal (N) frame. This was the forerunner of the S&W 357 registered Magnums.
Serial numbers ran from 35037 in 1930 to 62335 in 1941.
It was made to handle hot 38 special loads, way above todays 38+P's.
The grips are not original.
Standard barrel length was 5". 4" and 6.5" are scarce and worth $$$.
Measure your barrel from the face of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.
