Per the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, serial numbers for the 36 ran from 295000 in 1962 to 786544 in 1969. The flat thumbpiece ended in 66 and the diamond shape around the screwhole on the grips ended in 68. Czechbikr, That is one sharp looking Military & Police! Jim |

Thanks
I will take the word of the catalog and estimate that the gun was no later than 66 but after 62. What kind of response you think I would get if I paid the factory the 50 buck they want for a letter of authenticity? Kind of makes you wonder........

Just call them again. If you get a different person you might get a different answer.
The factory letter will be the date the gun was shipped from the factory and who it was shipped to. Jim |

Yikes
That is what I am afraid of. But I think I will call and ask them once again. I am not sure if paying the $50 dollars is worth knowing the specific date the gun was shipped and to whom.
I have a Model 37 no dashes or anything with a serial number of 280503. I figured that number was low enough it put it in the 60s, but what do you think the age of that gun is.......as you probably can tell I like mid sixties wheel guns like the these J frames. Thank for your help. |

36's and 37's (and 38,49 and 50) shared the same serial numbers. So, 1957 ended at 125000 and 1962 started at 295000. I would guess 1961 on your 37.
But it would be interesting to see what S&W says. Jim |

Called the factory again
I called the factory again to ask on the 36 and they now say 1965. And while I had them on the line I asked about the 37 and they put that date around 1960-61. Whew!!!!

Sounds like the person you got this time actually looked them up. Those dates sound correct and fit within the serial number blocks listed in the SCSW.

Anyone know the production year for a S&W Model 60-14 .357 Mag, serial number DTE2214? It's got an internal lock so I know it's 2001 or later. Thanks in advance if anyone finds it.

Thanks Jim
Czechbikr,
That is one sharp looking Military & Police! Jim I've been loading up some lighter rounds to take to the range and see how she operates. Hard to believe that I've had it for four days and haven't done so already...this "work" thing is getting in the way of my playtime. |

Derekadavis: 1971, according to the SN. Must have been one of the earliest ones produced, as the book says they were introduced approx. 1972.

Where is Model number?
Where do I find the Model number for my Smith & Wesson revolver? On the left side of the barrel it says Smith & Wesson. On the right side of the barrel it says "22 long rifle CTG." The serial number on the butt of the handle is "K-577xx." The stocks are bone. A family inventory calls it Model K-22, but I don't see anything on the gun to that effect.

rosatally - Your K-22 Masterpiece ("22" in this case is not a model number, but part of the name) was manufactured in 1948, which means it doesn't have a model number - S&W didn't start using model numbers until 1957. Your gun became the Model 17, so is sometimes referred to as a "pre-Model 17." If it did have a model number, it would be stamped in the frame cutout that's exposed when the cylinder is swung out. The "bone" stocks (ivory, perhaps? - now that would be special) are not original.

hello everyone, I just recently found an old smith and wesson that my father used to own, unfortunately he is not around to let me know what caliber this revolver is, so i was hoping to find some information here in this forum. It is a 5 shot, hand ejector, top break, revolver. on the top of the barrel it says "smith and wesson springfield mass. u.s.a. pat'd jan 24 65" and below that it says "july 11 65 aug 24 69 reissue july 25 71 may 11 80 jan 3 82". Also the serial number 71xxx (with a star at the end of the five numbers) is on the bottom of the handle and on the cylinder it's just the 71xxx. thank you.

Cherns,
Your decription (break-top, not hand ejector) and serial number leaves four possible models. If it has an exposed hammer then it could be a: 1) .32 Double Action 4th Model. SN's ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909. 2) .38 Double Action 2nd Model. SN's ran from 4001 in 1880 to 119000 in 1884. If it's a hammerless model then: 1) .32 Safety Hammerless 1st Model. SN's ran from 1 in 1888 to 91417 in 1902. 2) .38 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model. SN's ran from 42484 in 1890 to 116002 in 1898. Jim |

laytonj1,
thank you for such a quick answer. It does have a hammer so now at least I know that it could either be the 4th or 2nd model. I will also post some pics of it in the morning. Last edited by Cherns; May 9, 2010 at 01:12 AM. |

I am fairly certain that it is the .32 4th Model because the length of the cylinder is slightly less than 1''. Last edited by Cherns; May 9, 2010 at 08:39 PM. |

Model 66-2
I recently bought a Model 66 Combat Magnum...a 66-2. I would really like to know when it was made, shipped or any info available. The serial number is 173Kxxx. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FirstS&W: 1982. Just curious - does it have a pinned barrel? Your SN is near the middle of the range for that year, which is when the pinned barrel was dropped.
