It doesnt have to be (I didnt know that type of stuff was available)... I am just looking for something that is over the ear and is effective.

Ok, well, my favorite combination for really loud guns is foam plugs and electronic muffs. For quieter guns, just the muffs.
I had a pair of Radians electronic muffs that worked pretty well and lasted me a few years of hunting, even though they didn't seem overly rugged.
Also Howard Leight electronic muffs seem to get pretty good reviews.

What is your budget? Electronic muffs range from $40 to probably $500.

There are also "hearing aid" style products but the good ones run into the several $100 range.

I recommend checking for Howard Leight brand. Read the reviews and see if you like them. Otherwise, the Radians were nice but closer to $100.
