Looks to be 1979.
Something about the 4” nickel “N” frames that make them one of the best looking guns ever made.

Pre model 28 ?

I have what I believe may be a pre model 28.  The serial number is 23XXX with a small number 6 slightly above and in  front of the first number 2 in the serial number. ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated.

Is that the number on the bottom of the gun butt?

That is the serial number. S&W did not used to put the true serial number under the yoke, that is an "assembly number" to keep parts together before the gun is finished.
They later went to putting the serial number under the yoke because so many of the guns were getting target grips that covered the butt.

Your Highway Patrolman was probably made in 1954, maybe very early 1955.

Pre model 28

Thank you very much Jim for taking the time to help me out. Would this hand gun be considered a PRE- model 28?

Yes, but you have to realize that is a collectors' made up term.
Nobody went in a store in 1954 and asked for a Pre-28, they didn't know numbers would be assigned in a couple of years, they looked at a Highway Patrolman.

I can't speak for family memories but S&W started using the three letter prefix (followed by four numbers) in 1980 with AAA0000. Since the number is stamped on the bottom of the grip frame it would be the serial number.

Had the gun been made between 1969 to 1983 it would have a "J" in the serial number and prior to 1969 it would be numbers only.

And yes, since the gun is all steel you can use +P.

I'm a first time "poster", and hope I'm following the rules. I have a .38 (chief?) special, with a serial number: 54902 on the bottom of the gun butt. I contacted S&W, customer service told me that the only info they have is that the gun was manufactured between 1902 and 1905. Sounds improbable to me. Took it to a gun shop and was told that it was pre 1964. I have pics shared at:

https://share.icloud.com/photos/0KIN...f6iPOOfmUU8Muw

Can someone help me identify what I have here and approx. value? It was given to me close to 30 years ago and have never fired it. Thanks.

First, the serial number dates the gun to 1955.
I think the confusion on your gun is because it is a rather scarce model. What you have is .38 Chiefs Special Target. When S&W began using model numbers around 1957 that model became the model 50. As S&W never cataloged the model 50 many were marked as 36 or 36-1. Only about 2000 were made thru the years and very few of them with nickel finish.

There are so few of them in nickel that I could not give you a value but it would be high. Register over on the smith-wessonforum.com , post pictures and the collectors could give you more info.

Jim

Thanks Jim, much appreciated. I think I'll hold off on firing it at the range. I'll post on the forum and see what comes up. Cheers!

My book only goes to 2004 at prefix CHM. So CJJ is likely about 2006, maybe 2007.

Serial numbers ran from 25K0001 in 1978 to 56K9999 in 1979. so yours falls within that period.

N8981xx = 1983.
AET59xx = 1984/85
144K7xx = 1982.
DAK61xx = post 2004. My older book only goes to 2004.
