Smith and Wesson serial number search - Page 104

I want to thank everyone that has helped find S&W info. I did a search before making my post. I think I have come close but we will try here. This is what I just got from my aunt after my uncle passed. Older 22, barrel stamped 22 Smith & Wesson CTG, ser 228xx, 7 shots, wood grips. If I can get some info on this I would appreciate.

Wow. Sounds like a .22 Ladysmith, 3rd Model. Made from 1911 to 1921 on the "M" frame, the smallest frame used for S&W hand ejectors, with only a bit over 12,000 manufactured. Depending on configuration (barrel length, etc.) and condition, could be worth some serious change. Chambered for .22 Long, but SCSW says it should not be fired with modern ammo.

could you give me a date and any info on my fathers 38? serial # 9635xx. there is an s in front of the number on the butt about a half inch away. there is an H stamp on the frame with the cylinder swung out. my father was a guard at a german officers pow camp in Boston during WW2. and a guard for republic steel after that.

I have an unfired Model 34 that is N82xxx. Assume a 69 or 70?

S9635XX makes it a 38 Military & Police postwar. Serial numbers ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948.

Model 34's do not have a "N" serial prefix. Take the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt. There will be either no prefix or a "M" prefix.

i have a S&W .32-20 i caled their historian and got a ton of info inclusing manufacture date and how many were made while in production call them at 800-331-0852 ext 3223 they will ask u the modle and serial and tell u all about ur gun age,quantity, years in production and even recomend a safe ammo to use if the original ammo is hard to find i found out mine was made in 1923 personally

[I] have a S&W Model 57+1 41 Magnum, serial number BAR3897, and would like to know its birth history. It is stamped Springfield, Mass. on the right side of the frame, but it is not on the actual BBL as Smith & Wesson suggests it should be. It also is stamped "MARCAS REGISTRADAS" in the same location. It says "MADE IN USA", but I didn't know they spoke Spanish in Springfield, Mass. Is it really a Smith & Wesson, or just a copy?

That's not a valid S&W serial number. Take the number off the butt of the gun (i.e., the bottom of the frame where the grips are attached) - it may be necessary to remove the grips to see it. Be sure to include any letter(s) that the number may start with.

No, that sounds like a genuine Model 57, in this case dating from 1988. It should have the caliber stamped on the right side of the barrel and Smith & Wesson" on the left side. "Springfield, Mass." should only appear on the right side of the frame, not on the barrel.

I forget the whole story on the "MARCAS REGISTRADAS" thing, but it had something to do with S&W reacting to a flood of forgeries from one or more Spanish-speaking countries appearing on the market many years ago.

BTW, I live not too far away from the Mothership and visit the factory, range, and retail store in Springfield from time to time. There's probably about as much Spanish spoken in that area as there is English!

That's what I thought, the same number is on the butt of the gun. Thanks. I got a little worried when the serial number did not start with an "N" or an "S" though. I couldn't find any series of serial numbers that started with "BAR".

S&W started using the three-character letter prefix (starting with "AAA") on revolver serial numbers in 1980.

I cannot tell the manufacture date from the S&W Standard Catalogue. The SN is 8SL98XX. Anyone know how I can find the manufacture date?

The first number (8) is not correct. It's likely a "B". 65-5 production was during the 3 letter prefix serial numbers.

OK so the serial number under the grips looks like it starts w 8 but the cradle looks like it starts w B and I still cannot locate the manufacture year in the Standard catalogue for a S&W Model 65-5. 3 inch, brushed steel, 6 shot .357 w SN BSL98XX. Anyone know how I can find the manufacture date?

1994/95.

They don't list all the individual numbers/prefixes. You have to interpolate.
BSL falls after BRF in Aug 94 and before CAM in Jan 96.

Several of us would be more than happy to help, but we need more information because S&W used the same serial number series, and in some cases the exact same numbers, for different models. So . . . top break or swing-out cylinder, number of chambers in the cylinder, caliber, fixed or adjustable sights, and barrel length would all be good. Posting a photo, if you can, would be best.

Will - I was actually responding to av8r64. I think you've given us enough information to identify your gun as a .38 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model, manufactured from 1890 to 1898, with about 73,500 produced. (Still like to see a photo if you can post one.)
