Contender

Single shots. Love'em. I've a number of them - Contenders, an Encore, a Hi-Wall, a #1, a Handi-rifle, a couple of Martinis. They all shoot better than I do with the right ammo.
Right after I got my first Contender - many years ago now - My son and I went to the range with it - a 16 1/4" carbine barrel in .30-30 Win. We didn't have a proper rifle scope so we mounted a 1X Tasco pistol scope - eye relief was a problem. I mention all of this to emphasize that this was NOT a target gun. My handloads.
I watched that boy shoot one inch groups with that thing at 100 yards. I was not expecting that.
The Encore in 30-06. Tried milsurp ammo one day. Nope. Bullets all over the place. Gun was new. Thought I had a lemon. Went home and loaded up some milder loads (165 grain SP, 54 grains of 4350). Went back to the range - 1 to 1.5" groups every time.

Break open single shots - plenty accurate.

For hunting, I greatly prefer single shot rifles, no matter what the game or the range. I like the challenge on one shot, one kill. A quality single shot rifle is far more accurate than the shooter.

Thenh again, given my druthers, I prefer close shots. I hate watching someone take a five hundred yard shot and call it hunting. That's shooting, and maybe great shooting, but it isn't hunting.
