Hoppes #9 ?

If I dip my brush in the bottle of Hoppes and then run it through the bore, can I dip it again or will it contaminate the rest of the bottle ?

Rule of Thumb:

NEVER double dip anything. I do NOT double dip any process or liquid, be it refinishing, painting, gun-stuff, or chips and cookies!

Can/will contaminate. Why take the chance? Just pour out a tiny amount and use it up.

Great question and eventually it will but for now, you should be okay. I do the same with other solvents and all the junk, sinks to the bottom of the bottle. ..

You're fine! I've done it for years you have no worries. Besides, your patches are the big thing as long as those come out clean (mine always do so how is my double dipped solvent putting dirt in my gun?) you got a clean gun! I can't think of anyone I know that worries about double dipping their brush in the solvent bottle except now for the one guy who replied to this post

Yes it does leave dirt in the bottle but you can still use it. I have a bottle in my equipment box that is just for dipping my brushes. When it gets dirty enough I change it out with new solvent.

I do all the time, but only in the smaller bottle of Hoppes that I refill from a much larger bottle. I just rinse the small bottle out before I refill it. Another thing to be aware of is that the Hoppes will attack the brush itself if you don't clean it afterwards.

How about spraying the brush with something like brake cleaner between dips in the bottle?
Or using a thin patch with the brush to keep it clean.

Captains1911 hit the nail on the head! I do the exact same and haven't had any problems, except when I was an amateur kid and didn't think to clean off my Dad's brushes after use, and yep, when he went back to use them the looked like worn out pennies...

I'd use an "eye dropper", a syringe, a straw, etc.. to transfer drops of solvent to the brush

You can buy cheap syringes at Tractor Supply

I double dip and have had any issues. You'll be fine as others have pointed out.

I don't dip the brushes directly when I use open cap bottled solvents. I use an eye dropper. I do this so I don't tip the bottles over as well.

FYI, don't get gun cleaner on wood kitchen tables. Somebody could write a book on that fix.

I like the drinking straw idea. Grab a handful at the next fast food stop and put then in your gun cleaning box. Pretty cool. Thanks.

I'll admit it, I have double dipped!

But now I single dip a patch, run it through the bore to get it wet, dip another patch, and soak the bore again, then scrub with a brush.
That does two things. One, it coats the bore with solvent, and two, it allows the solvent to soak between wetting, and brushing. I usually let the Hoppe's do it's thing for a few minutes before I start brushing.
Don't use a patch that fits too tight so that it works more like a mop to distribute the solvent.

When done, rinse the bronze brush in Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol 91% . Its cheap and availabe. Double dip. This >
