That type of blanket statement is simply false. It all depends on what payload you are using. Not everyone uses 00 or 000 buck shot for HD

3. Shot guns within normal room-sized ranges are effectively "point-impact" weapons. Impact pattern measured in inches

4. Shotguns are high recoil. Do not get a "shorty" and expect either aim it or control it.

5. Shotguns at normal room distances go right through double-layer drywalls --- big time

Back on topic:
Springs are not going to wear out from being stored loaded. On a hammerless gun, closing the action on empty chambers leaves the hammers cocked, so if you want to relieve the tension, you want snap-caps in the chambers and to pull the triggers.

This assumes that there are two triggers on the coach gun... (insert discussion on single trigger double barrel operations and inertia from fired shell here)

Anyways, people leave those springs in tension for decades and they still work fine.

amen to that, we had a 2 year old killed in her crib here last year when a 00 pellet went through an apartment wall.

I live in a house and keep mine loaded with #8, it will do a fine job in a home defense situation. For a more graphic illustration

This looks good, but there was a thread about the new mossberg shotguns not being reliable. I don't know when they dropped the ball on QC, but if I thought I could count on a reliable gun, I could find a Mossberg youth model 20ga for under $400. It's short enough. This gun would be shot at the range (2 boxes of birdshot), cleaned, loaded and placed in a handy location.
