reloading .243 with Win 748 powder
Anyone ever reload the .243 Winchester with Winchester 748 powder? I can't seem to find any data on it, and I was curious about it. I have a lot of win 748 powder from my .223 and was thinking about trying it out.

I checked all 5 of my (modern) reloading manuals (Speer, Nosler, Lyman, etc) and the free Winchester #15 manual that you get where they sell the powder. None of these list any loads for the 243 using 748.
*(edit) I just find one old Lyman manual from 1970 that list some 748 loads for the 243, but they list it as 748BR powder. I would be afraid that the formula has changed. It really is strange that 748 isn't listed in the modern manuals for the 243 "at all". It is considered to be a good powder for medium rifle, i.e. 222, 223, 30-30, 308, etc., but when even Winchester won't give a load using it in 243..... 760 does seem to be a popular choice (in the manuals) if you want Winchester powder. Personally, back when I reloaded 243, my records showed that I always had good results with IMR 4350 and 4064, my bullet weights were 90 gr Spitzer or 100 gr boat tail. Hope this helps. k Last edited by k in AR; January 15, 2005 at 07:18 PM. |

Yes, I saw the same thing in my manuals, lots of 760 listed for the .243, but the 748 recommended for .223, 30-30, and .308. It just seems strange to me that a powder would be good for the .223 and the .308 but not the .243.
I even went back to my old Ackley books, etc and didn't find anything. Oh well, maybe one day when I'm bored I'll try working up a load just to see how well it works. |

WW 748 is too fast for the .243 with all but the lightest bullets. A look at an older Hodgdon's pamphlet shows a max charge of 40 grains of H335 under a 75 grain bullet and a top charge of 36 grains under a 85.
H335 started as surplus WW 748 and I have interchanged data for 25 years without untoward events. My experience has convinced me that they are the same thing within lot-to-lot variance. I would not hesitate to cut the above loads by 4 grains and start my workup process with WW 748 from there. That's me. You're you, and the best judge of your own risk tolerance level. All the usual warnings apply. |
