Is the .280 the same as a 7 mm? I need to buy bullets.

Yes, .284 is 7MM. 280 Remington shoots 7mm, .284 bullets.

Do you really mean bullets, projectiles for reloading? If so, handlerer2 is right.

I ask because there are a lot of people who call cartridges "bullets."

If the OP is one of them, then the .280 Remington cartridge is NOT the same as a 7mm Mauser or a 7mm Remington Magnum, the most common (but not the only) 7mms to be found.

Yup.
Once upon a time Remington thought they could pump up sales by renaming the .280 Remington as "7mm Remington Express." Careless shoppers did not distinguish between 7mm Express and 7mm Magnum. This led to some complaints "It won't go in." and "My gun blew up." So they changed back.

And it was 7mm-06 before that. I like the round a lot. Had a couple over the years and on paper know it is probably a better round than 30-06. But I have 30-06 rifles with too much history to let go and I could never justify having 2 rounds so close in performance.

There were not supposed to have been any rifles delivered with the 7mm-06 monicker. Because it isn't, which could lead to some bad results trying to use '06 brass.

See also 6mm Remington Magnum.

New from factory rifles, probably not.
However it would depend on the gunsmith that did the re-barreling/ chamber reaming as to whether or not they stamped the barrel as 7mm-06.

Although standard 7mm-08 fits and shoots in mine, i did stamp the AI on it for IF i ever sold it. (Fat chance of that happening).

The wildcat 7mm-06 going back to the .285 OKH were mostly just that, .30-06 necked down to 7mm. The .280 Remington is not, about .050" longer head to shoulder. I guess somebody was afraid you could somehow cram a 7mm-06 into a .270, like the infamous 8mm in .30.

I have copy of Speer Wildcat manual 1956 and it has some Ackley's and others. There is a 7mm/06 made from either 270 or 30-06 case and the case length is 2.494.

They list 7x64 Improved it was blown out 270 case with 30 degree shoulder and case length was 2.535. If that case was blown out another .010 it would of been close to 280AI 2.525. In the manual is loads tested by Speer and top load using 160gr Speer is 2940fps using 58gr/H-4831.

The 7mm/06 loads with 160gr 2800/2700fps.
