Definative manuals for 1911 and High power?

I've come to the conclusion recently, that if I'm going to pay someone to do half *ss repairs or alterations on my things - then I might as well screw them up myself for a lot less money. At least this way I will learn something and maybe get a few new tools. That being said, which manuals/ books/videos would you all recommend for someone who wants to do BASIC pistol smithing on the 1911 and HP? Thanks.

For the 1911, you'd have to search some to come up with a better pair of books than the Jerry Kuhnhausen "The Colt .45 Automatic, A Shop Manual" volumes.

If you find a good book for the BHP, I'll also be interested. I have a FEG clone, and I just picked up a WWII Inglis HP, so I'll be needing some reference material.

http://www.discountgunbooks.com offers a manual on the care and feeding etc of the BHP. Go to their catalog pages, click on A-D (IIRC) and scroll down the left side of the page.

I've always gone by Hallock's book on the 1911. It's recently buried itself under something, so I can't give you an address.

They're sold by some of the book guys at gunshows...

Lots of info on serial numbers and proof marks as well as "how to".

I ordered that HP manual from DiscountGun Books about three weeks ago and still don't have it. I e-mailed twice and finally got a reply, it's on backorder. I also asked why they don't have a security mode for their online credit card ordering and the lady said "we've never had credit card security and we've never had a problem yet". If and when I get it, I will give it a once over and do a short review for you guys. I'm a member over at the fnhp forum and I posted a request for titles over there and nobody responded. Maybe one of you HiPower smiths needs to write the definitive HP manual for all of us.

I have not ordered from them. I have ordered from the people that publish Jerry's books (Heritage Books) and have had good service. The only reason I suggested Discount Books is that I knew the BHP book was listed.

Jim V., Atticus......... The mail came today with "The Browning Hi-Power Pistols" by Donald B. McLean. It is a dandy little manual of only 47 pages but worth the money and the wait. It has cut-away and exploded renderings of the gun as good as I've ever seen and a lot of good, detailed info on field and detail stripping perfect for the novice. With this manual and the help of the great people over at the HP forum (www.fnhipower.com} a rookie like me who is reasonably handy ought to be able to accomplish a lot in home smithing.

This book is published by Desert Publications @ $9.95 and in my opinion, one of their better manuals. All in all, I'm pleased and I thank Jim for pointing this out to me.

Now Atticus, let's get busy. I wish I would have had this when I did my trigger job and removed the mag disconnect from my FEG but at least future work will be a lot easier.
