Pawn Shop treasures
Well I just got my 2 finds from laYWAY at the pawn shop.
The first one is CVA /JUKAR .45 cal Kentucky style. It is in GOOD shape, no rust or pitting to be found and the stock is in real good shape. only paid 55.00 for it The 2nd one is ASM steel frame 1858 .44. it locks up tight, looks good, and has no rust or pitting. Has nice looking riffeling in the barrel, the frame is steel with brass plating that is wearing some. The Cylinder is black and so is the barrel. Before I post price can anyone give me a rough idea as to the value.

You sure that it is not a Brass Frame on that ASM '58?
The reason I'm asking is that I've yet to see a Brass Plated Frame on any Replica C&B Revolver. |

When I take the Cylinder out the inside of the frame looks to be steel.

I think you will find if you brasso that up that dark discoloration will go away to reveal more brass. The only things I can think of that would require brass plating are certain non ferrous metals and plastic, for chrome plating. Now that is not to say that you cannot brass plate something before chrome plating, but it shows more in wear, chips easier, and just generally looks cheaper than if you were to chrome steel. Being that it is an 1858 and the frame being all the same material; all you would have to do is take the grips off and scratch the inside of the frame under the grips. If under there you find that you can find steel under brass, then you have something I have never seen before.

Magnet!
Even if it is Plated, a magnet will cling to Steel & Iron but not to Brass, Aluminum, Magnesium ect.. |

Magnet sticks right to it....or so I thought, the magnets I used was real strong ones and I took the cylinder out and tried it again...no sticking...
Hmmm Guess it is brass...fooled me. OK now anyone got any idea what it is worth. Thanks

I'd say 75.00 ASM quality was hit or miss to say the least.

One trick I use for polishing brass is to mix vinegar with salt. Then let the two set for about 15 minutes to let the salt start to dissolve into the vinegar then stir. Soak some up with a wash cloth and rub the brass. Presto, a very nice looking brass will shine !
