Did you ever run out of ammo ?

The factory new nickel-plated stuff stays home, except for a box a year or so in each caliber to refresh the stock. Even do that with some reloads - leave the nickel-ed ones at home because they won't reload as much, but neither will they get grungy looking.

I guess the OP begs the question, why would you ever take to the range 100% of your ammo inventory? I wouldn't. If I were down to 100 rounds, and if it weren't an election year, and if only the dog weren't complaining at me, I might take 50. If that's not enough, I'd call and be sure I can buy more at the range or at a shop on the way to the range. Otherwise, I'd cancel. I don't light the coals until I know there's some meat to throw on the grill.

anyway the point I was about to make is that I NEVER buy a box of 50 rounds by itself. That's like having a jelly sandwich, where is the peanut butter?

I've got a supplier I get bulk reloads from, awesome stuff, I have plenty of people think it was much pricier new stuff. If anybody in the market for a supplier I will provide details, they ship or you can pick up at a gun show if there is near by.

I keep a resrve of 1000 rounds for each of my 6 main handgun calibers that I don't plan on getting into. I basically keep 250 rounds for each caliber in my working supply and reload during the week what I shot up the previous week. I can load 200 rounds in an hours so catching up is never too far away

No and not likely. I have enough components in 9, 40, 45 to load up several K of each in my off premise loading facility. I have around 3K of each caliber in the house to use at the range on any given training day. Social is another matter that is not discussed here as it is beyond definitions. I have stock of primers and brass from the middle 1990's and lead from the early 1990's until now. Lots of time to exercise the right arm on the progressive presses (read that as 2 Dillon Square Deal B's).

I have meaningfully fired up all of my ammo before, but never unintentionally ran out. I usually fire it all up beforehand when I sell a gun that is the only one I own in a certain caliber. I have also gotten to the range before realizing I didn't bring any ammo with me.

Never. I have 3K rounds of 40 S&W in ammo cans. It is my "emergency" stash. I still buy ammo, but I rotate the oldest out of my stash for range activities and add the new to my stash. I will always have surplus ammo.

I have run out of ammunition for some guns, sometimes for months at a time. But I don't think I've been without any ammunition in many decades. And since I now have some ammunition with no gun to use it in I'll probably never be without again.

I keep 1,000 rounds of 9mm in reserve, and I buy extra when I shoot.

Eventually, I'll buy a rifle, and I'll put together 1,000 spare for that.

I suppose this hobby makes us value ammunition.

Nope wont allow it to happen. I have started buying a box of ammo here and there for each caliber I have and putting it aside. Compared to others I don't have a huge stockpile but I got around 500 rounds for each caliber except 22 which I have around 5000.

Sure. Back in the day I'd just stop at the store on the way to the range. Ammo was cheap and easy to get.

It was only after I started reloading that the stock pile started to grow.

.223 and FMJ handgun ammo, you betcha. Been out of 7.62 Nagant for quite some time now, not a priority. Might still have a partial box of .357, haven't looked lately.
Always have SD ammo on hand, .38, 9mm, .45 ACP, even .45 Colt for the Model P (and now the Rossi 92). Buffalo Bore SWC and some JHP. Cashier accused me of having a Judge.
.30-06 and .30-30, usually have at least a box and a partial each. Currently swimming in the aforementioned .223 and M2 Ball. At least by my standards.
Also have ammo where I have run out of gun. Partial box of .44 magnum for the Mountain Gun I no longer own. Kinda miss that one. Couple rounds 7.62x39 from the SKS I sold to a buddy. Even eight or ten rounds of .270. I have never owned or even shot a .270...

Welp - - seeings that you've been in LE for 30 years & have a military background - - I believe that sums it up pretty well...

I firmly believe that we learn from our mistakes - which can be downright expensive...

A better way is to, obviosly. learn form someone else's mistakes..
It's a lot cheaper & safer that way .

Honestly - I don't want to know the details. Just saying it the way you did is enough...

As far as the OP's question goes. Nope. Never ran out. I always made sure I had some left for both home and the trip there.

At least in the past few years I haven't,,,
Because I now have a bench stock of ammunition.

After that one summer when ammo was not on the shelves,,,
I decided how much of any cartridge I wanted to always have on hand,,,
I bit the bullet so to speak and shelled out the cash to establish those levels,,,
So now I always have a sufficient amount of ammo on hand and replenish it as needed.

I take only what I want to shoot that day,,,
And ASAP replace that amount back into bench stock.

Metal/wood rifles are not paper weights. They could be used as bats. My Remington pellet gun weights like 6lbs and its wooden stock.
